Yellow: Surface imperfections
CHIP, MARK, NICK, SCRATCH can each describe damage, a blemish, or another imperfection on a surface. A chip may remove a small piece, a mark can leave a visible spot or line, a nick is a small cut, and a scratch is a narrow scrape.
#1 Best Overall
Green: Landlocked countries
CHAD, HUNGARY, LAOS, PARAGUAY are all countries without a coastline. They are geographically distinct—Chad is in Central Africa, Hungary in Central Europe, Laos in Southeast Asia, and Paraguay in South America—but share the same geographic status.
Blue: European countries minus or altering one letter
BULGARI, CYRUS, HUNGRY, SPAN are wordplay forms based on European country names:
| Board entry | Country source | Change |
|---|---|---|
| BULGARI | Bulgaria | Remove the final A |
| CYRUS | Cyprus | Change P to S |
| HUNGRY | Hungary | Remove the final A |
| SPAN | Spain | Remove I |
The altered spellings are intentionally close to familiar words, making this group harder to spot alongside the intact country HUNGARY.
Purple: Starting with words for “stylish”
CHICKEN, COOLIDGE, HIPPO, SMARTIES each begins with a word meaning stylish:
| Answer | Stylish synonym at the start | Remaining letters |
|---|---|---|
| CHICKEN | CHIC | KEN |
| COOLIDGE | COOL | IDGE |
| HIPPO | HIP | PO |
| SMARTIES | SMART | IES |
Unlike the yellow and green categories, this group depends on seeing a shorter word at the beginning of each longer entry.
Complete answer grid
Here are all 16 entries in Connections #1223, organized by their solved category:
| Category | Entries |
|---|---|
| Surface imperfections | CHIP, MARK, NICK, SCRATCH |
| Landlocked countries | CHAD, HUNGARY, LAOS, PARAGUAY |
| European countries minus or altering one letter | BULGARI, CYRUS, HUNGRY, SPAN |
| Starting with words for “stylish” | CHICKEN, COOLIDGE, HIPPO, SMARTIES |
The complete board is BULGARI, CHAD, CHICKEN, CHIP, COOLIDGE, CYRUS, HIPPO, HUNGARY, HUNGRY, LAOS, MARK, NICK, PARAGUAY, SCRATCH, SMARTIES, and SPAN.
Why this grid is deceptive
HUNGARY and HUNGRY sit next to each other conceptually, but they belong to different groups: HUNGARY is an intact landlocked country, while HUNGRY is the altered form of Hungary used in the European-name wordplay category. Several words also look like ordinary nouns or adjectives before the spelling pattern becomes clear. Solving the literal surface-damage group first can remove four decoys and make the two spelling-based groups easier to recognize.

How to use the hints without spoiling the puzzle
- Start with the yellow clue and scan for four words that can describe physical blemishes.
- Use the green clue to identify countries with no sea access, while checking whether a near-spelling such as HUNGRY is actually a decoy.
- After those groups are removed, compare the remaining entries with European country names and test one-letter deletions or substitutions.
- For the final four, look at the first three to five letters of each word and ask whether they form a synonym for stylish.
Connections allows up to four mistakes, so submitting a category only after checking all four entries is safer than locking in a tempting partial pattern.
