Each word is a country name with its first letter removed: Finland becomes INLAND, Bolivia becomes OLIVIA, Iran becomes RAN, and Rwanda becomes WANDA.
How Connections works
Connections asks players to sort sixteen words into four groups of four based on a shared link. The cited guides describe selecting four words and submitting a guess; a wrong guess costs a life, and four mistakes end the game. Groups are color-coded, with yellow generally the easiest and purple generally the hardest. These mechanics are described by the guides rather than quoted from the official NYT page.
