Full answers for Connections #958

Stop here if you only wanted hints. The complete sorting is below.

Color Category Four answers
Yellow Gear for a boxer GLOVES, MOUTHGUARD, ROBE, SHORTS
Green Championship AWARD, CROWN, CUP, TITLE
Blue Kinds of necklines BOAT, CREW, HALTER, SCOOP
Purple Snow ____ CONE, GLOBE, LEOPARD, PEA

Yellow: Gear for a boxer

GLOVES and MOUTHGUARD are the most obvious equipment. ROBE and SHORTS complete the group as clothing associated with a boxer, especially in a ring or before a bout.

Green: Championship

AWARD, CROWN, CUP and TITLE can each represent a championship honor or the thing a winner receives or holds.

Blue: Kinds of necklines

BOAT, CREW, HALTER and SCOOP are all neckline descriptions used for tops. “Crew” refers to a crew neck, while boat, halter and scoop identify other neckline cuts.

Purple: Snow ____

Add “snow” before each word: snow cone, snow globe, snow leopard and snow pea.

Why the grid is tricky

Several words invite tempting but incorrect associations. CUP, SCOOP and CONE can suggest ice-cream service, but that grouping leaves no valid fourth word and breaks the phrase pattern required by the purple set. CONE belongs with SNOW because “snow cone” is the established expression; CUP belongs with the championship terms, and SCOOP is a neckline.

The puzzle also mixes literal categories with a phrase-completion group. Boxing gear and necklines are semantic categories, championship words are related by meaning, while the purple set depends on placing the same word after “snow.” Testing the exact relationship for all four words is safer than grouping two or three words that merely feel related.

A spoiler-conscious way to solve it

  1. Scan for the most concrete set. GLOVES, MOUTHGUARD, ROBE and SHORTS point to boxing equipment and attire.
  2. Look for a second group built around winning. AWARD, CROWN, CUP and TITLE all fit championship language.
  3. After removing those eight words, identify BOAT, CREW, HALTER and SCOOP as neckline terms.
  4. Use the remaining four words to test the phrase “snow ____”: CONE, GLOBE, LEOPARD and PEA.
