NYT Connections Tips: How to Spot Categories Without Guessing

Read all 16 Connections tiles, state a precise rule for each candidate group, and test it against the rest of the board before submitting.

To spot NYT Connections categories without blind guessing, read all 16 tiles, state a precise rule for each possible group of four, and check whether that rule also fits another tile. Keep overlapping words provisional; use confirmed groups and elimination to resolve the ambiguity before submitting.

What you are trying to solve

Connections asks you to sort 16 terms into four groups of four. A group is not proven just because its words share an obvious association: the category has to account for exactly the right four tiles in the context of the whole board. The New York Times Help Center description presents the game as finding themes between words and identifies NYT Games platforms as places to play. An academic analysis of the puzzle likewise describes the four-by-four grouping task and notes that quick associations can be misleading (COLING 2025 paper).

A repeatable way to test a candidate category

  1. Read the whole board before settling on a connection

Scan every tile before committing to the first pattern you notice. Literal similarities are useful hypotheses, but another word elsewhere on the board may change what a group means.

  2. Put the rule into words

Describe what the four tiles share in a way you can check. It might be a semantic class, a shared prefix or suffix, a word that can precede or follow each tile, a hidden word, a homophone, or another defensible word pattern. “These feel related” is not specific enough to test; “each can follow the same word” gives you something concrete to verify.

    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  3. Check whether the rule catches a fifth tile

If another tile appears to fit just as well, the category is unresolved. Do not pick four at random and ignore the extra candidate. Check whether that apparent extra has a better home elsewhere, and whether your proposed rule is precise enough to distinguish the group.

  4. Mark words with more than one plausible home

Some tiles can support more than one reasonable association. Keep those tiles mentally provisional rather than letting one early idea decide the board. A stronger group explains all four words under one rule and does not leave another tile fitting that rule equally well.

  5. Use elimination before submitting an uncertain set

If a candidate remains ambiguous, work through the clearer categories first. Once a confirmed group is removed, the smaller set of remaining tiles may reveal which apparent member was a decoy. Three related words alone are not a reason to submit a fourth tile by guesswork.

  6. Commit to the clearest explanation

Choose the group whose rule is specific, consistent, and fits the full board better than its alternatives. If you have to stretch a word’s meaning or overlook a plausible fifth member, pause and test another interpretation.

  7. Try wordplay when literal meanings stop helping

Not every category is a straightforward semantic class. Test structural possibilities such as a shared word before or after each tile, a hidden word, a letter added or removed, homophones, or anagrams. Treat these as possible explanations to verify, not as guarantees about any particular category.

Why a convincing-looking trio can be a trap

The COLING 2025 paper illustrates how a familiar association can be only a partial grouping. “Normal,” “Standard,” and “Benchmark” may suggest “Status Quo,” but “Normal” belongs with “Dry,” “Combination,” and “Oily” in the category “Skin Types.” The first association sounds plausible until the remaining words and the four-member requirement are considered. The practical check is to test every candidate against every tile, not to treat a recognizable trio as settled (paper example).

What the available study results do—and do not—show

The paper’s figures describe a limited study, not typical outcomes for all Connections players. Its authors collected 358 puzzles spanning June 12, 2023, to June 3, 2024, and used 100 puzzles in their experiments. In a small human baseline of three evaluators, average group accuracy was 56% in the no-hints condition and 60.67% in the full-hints condition. Those results are specific to the study setup; they do not establish that any particular tip will improve a player’s results or that the evaluators represent the player population (COLING 2025 paper).
