NYT Connections #576 was the puzzle for Tuesday, January 7, 2025. Below, the hints come first, followed by the complete groups and an explanation of the trickiest connection. Stop before the answers if you want to solve the 16-word grid yourself.
Spoiler-safe hints for Connections #576
The New York Times Connections board has 16 words. Find four groups of four, while remembering that four incorrect guesses end the game. The usual difficulty progression runs from yellow (most direct) to purple (most wordplay-heavy), so start with the most literal-looking set.
- Yellow: Singing groups or instrument-less musical forms.
- Green: Words that can describe a small quantity.
- Blue: Phrases used as biography or book sub-headings.
- Purple: Complete repeated phrases built around “is.”
These progressive clues match the contemporaneous guides from TechRadar and Forbes.

NYT Connections #576 answers
Spoilers begin here. The four categories and their members are:
| Color | Category | Words | Why they fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Vocal music | A CAPPELLA, BARBERSHOP, DOO-WOP, MADRIGAL | Each refers to a vocal style, ensemble tradition or form of singing. |
| Green | A HANDFUL OF | A FEW, CERTAIN, SOME, VARIOUS | Each can work as an indefinite quantity expression for an unspecified selection or small number. |
| Blue | Book subtitles | A LIFE, A NOVEL, ESSAYS, PART ONE | These phrases commonly appear after a colon in book titles, especially biographies, fiction and essay collections. |
| Purple | “_ IS _” (IS _) | A DEAL, A ROSE, ENOUGH, LOVE | They complete familiar “is” statements: “a deal,” “a rose,” “enough” and “love.” |
The category labels and all 16 memberships are also reported consistently by WordHint, alongside the TechRadar and Forbes solutions.
How to see the trickiest connections
Lock in vocal music first
A cappella, barbershop, doo-wop and madrigal are the most literal set. They all point to music made through voices, making this the safest opening group.
Use the remaining quantity words for green
After removing the music terms, a few, certain, some and various can all indicate an unspecified amount or selection. “Certain” is the intended trap: it can be an adjective meaning definite, but here it belongs with the quantity expressions.
Recognize title language in the blue group
A Life, A Novel, Essays and Part One look unrelated as ordinary words. Their connection is bibliographic: each is the kind of phrase used in a subtitle or title continuation.
Rank #4
Leave the abstract wordplay for purple
The final four are not a conventional topic category. Insert each into a familiar “is” construction: “a deal,” “a rose,” “enough” and “love.” This is the most abstract group, which is why it is best tested after the clearer sets have been removed.

Connections rewards finding one unambiguous quartet before committing to a tempting but broad association. For #576, the literal vocal-music group reduces the board to 12 words. The quantity expressions then remove four words that could otherwise distract from the book-title pattern. With those eight gone, the subtitle set and the repeated-“is” wordplay become much easier to verify.
