Spoiler-free hints for Connections #504
Try to sort the grid by meaning before looking for familiar phrases. The categories become progressively less direct:
- Yellow: Four words that can describe someone or something with a lively, cheeky, or confident attitude.
- Green: Four words for the atmosphere or overall character of a place, situation, or experience.
- Blue: Four specialized terms used as measurement units in science and engineering.
- Purple: Four words that complete the same well-known title or phrase.
The yellow group is the most accessible semantically. The blue group depends on recognizing technical vocabulary, while the purple group is the most indirect because it relies on title completion rather than a shared definition.

NYT Connections #504 answers
| Category | Words | Why they fit |
|---|---|---|
| SASSY | CUTE, FRESH, SMART, WISE | Each can describe a person or thing with a lively, cheeky, spirited, or confident attitude. |
| AMBIENCE | AIR, FEELING, MOOD, QUALITY | Each can refer to the atmosphere or overall character of a place, situation, or experience. |
| UNITS | BAR, BEL, LUX, MOLE | A bar measures pressure, a bel measures sound intensity, a lux measures illumination, and a mole measures amount of substance in chemistry. |
| THE LITTLE ___ | MERMAID, PRINCE, RASCALS, TRAMP | They complete familiar titles or phrases: The Little Mermaid, The Little Prince, The Little Rascals, and The Little Tramp. |
How the solve works
Start with SASSY
The first category is a literal descriptive grouping. Once four of the words read naturally as playful or cheeky descriptors, the SASSY set is the cleanest group to remove from the board.
Separate AMBIENCE from ordinary synonyms
AIR, FEELING, MOOD, and QUALITY can all describe the character of an environment or experience. Their broad meanings can create distractions, but the shared “overall atmosphere” sense identifies AMBIENCE.
Recognize the scientific UNITS
BAR, BEL, LUX, and MOLE look unrelated in everyday language. They become a group when read as named measurement units: pressure, sound intensity, illumination, and chemical amount of substance, respectively.
Finish with THE LITTLE ___
The remaining words form recognizable titles when preceded by “The Little.” This phrase-completion mechanism is why the purple group is less literal than the other three.
