Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four; Wordle asks you to guess one five-letter word in six tries. The first is about spotting shared themes while avoiding misleading overlaps. The second is about using each guess to narrow down a hidden answer. Both are daily New York Times games listed as available without a Games subscription.

How is Connections different from Wordle?
Connections is a grouping puzzle
In Connections, the words are visible from the start. Your job is to work out which four belong together, then find the other three groups. Some words may seem to fit a plausible category but belong elsewhere; that overlap is part of the puzzle’s design. There is one intended solution, so a convincing alternative grouping is not necessarily correct.
Wordle is a constrained guessing puzzle
Wordle gives you six chances to identify a five-letter answer. Its central challenge is to use those attempts to narrow down which word is hidden. Unlike Connections, it is not asking you to organize a board of words into themes.
#1 Best Overall
Which is harder, Connections or Wordle?
Neither game is objectively harder based on the available NYT descriptions; they test different approaches. Connections rewards grouping, recognizing themes, and resisting plausible false groupings. Wordle rewards narrowing down a hidden word within a fixed number of guesses. The color-coded category difficulty in Connections is a built-in clue about the groups, while the cited NYT overview describes Wordle’s answer length and guess limit.

Rank #2
NYT lists both Connections and Wordle among its daily games available without a qualifying Games subscription. A subscription matters if you want to play older Connections puzzles: the archive is available to All Access and Games subscribers and includes puzzles from June 12, 2023 onward. Archived play contributes to completed-puzzle and win-rate-related statistics, but not to streaks. The cited pages do not establish a comparable Wordle archive entitlement.
