How to read these Pips hints
NYT Pips is a single-player, domino-inspired puzzle. Tiles are placed horizontally or vertically, while each colored region sets a rule for the pips in its cells: a required total, matching values, or a less-than limit. The clues below are region-level nudges, not a board diagram. The dated guide is by the Mashable Team, hosted by Yahoo Tech, and was published October 16, 2025 at 10:53 AM UTC.
October 16 hints without tile-placement spoilers
Use the difficulty tier and region condition to narrow down your placements. The guide provides no solve-time comparison or independent difficulty score.
Easy
- One region totals 6.
- One region totals 7.
- One region totals 12.
- One region requires every pip to equal 5.
- One region requires a total below 3.
Medium
- One region requires every pip to equal 1.
- One region totals 6.
- One region totals 21.
- One region requires every pip to equal 5.
Hard
- Two regions have a less-than-4 condition.
- One region requires every pip to equal 5.
- One region requires every pip to equal 6.
- One region totals 5.
- One region totals 2.
- One region requires every pip to equal 4.

Playing a Pips-style puzzle offline
A standard double-six domino set can serve as an optional offline play-alike, but it is not needed to access or solve the digital NYT puzzle. EnergyPips describes its own separate date-seeded Pips-style puzzle as using standard double-six dominoes; that is not the NYT board or its answer set.
