Here are spoiler-light first moves for the New York Times Pips puzzles dated Wednesday, September 9, 2026, followed by the full Easy, Medium, and Hard solutions. Each difficulty has a separate board.

  • Easy: The top-right single cell marked > 4 must be 5.
  • Medium: The single-cell = 0 region must be 0.
  • Hard: The top-right single cell marked = 3 must be 3.

Stop here if you only wanted a nudge. The complete region values and tile placements appear below the spoiler warning.

How to approach the September 9 Pips boards

Pips is a domino-placement logic puzzle: place every domino so the values in each colored region satisfy its rule. The September 9 boards use exact-sum, comparison, all-equal, and unrestricted regions. Begin with a single-cell target or another tightly constrained region, then track the remaining dominoes and check both halves of each placement against their cells. Guessing placements without accounting for the tray can create conflicts later.

The three boards differ in size and constraint mix. These are counts for this date, not general Pips board averages:

Difficulty Cells Dominoes Regions Useful first constraint
Easy 10 5 5 Top-right > 4 single cell
Medium 14 7 9 Single-cell = 0 region
Hard 28 14 14 Top-right = 3 single cell

Hard has five doubles in its tray and several tightly constrained regions. That makes placing doubles early in matching all-equal regions a useful way to narrow the board; it does not establish a solve-time comparison.

Spoiler warning: full answers and placements

The solutions below give region values and tile locations for all three boards. Rows and columns are numbered from 1, with row 1 at the top and column 1 at the left. Tile endpoints are written in the order given; the listed cells show where each endpoint goes.
