NYT Strands game #281, from December 9, 2024, has the theme “Quiet at first.” The theme words all begin with an unpronounced letter. Start with the spoiler-light hints below; the full answers and spangram are further down.
Hints for NYT Strands #281
Look for words whose first letter is silent. If you want to keep solving unaided, stop here before the answer section.
- Theme: “Quiet at first.”
- Spangram clue: What’s an aphthong?
- Spangram path: TechRadar describes it as crossing from the left side of the board at row four to the right side at row three.
- Parade’s answer initials: MN, KN, HO, GN, WR, PS; the spangram begins SI.
TechRadar also suggested these non-theme words for earning in-game hints: SLAP, POEM, NOISEY, MILE, SMELT, and PONY. In the rules reproduced by Parade, finding three non-theme words earns one hint, which reveals letters from a theme word.

Spangram: SILENT LETTER
Why these words fit the theme
Each theme answer begins with a letter that is not pronounced: W in WRAP, P in PSALM, G in GNOME, H in HONESTY, M in MNEMONIC, and K in KNUCKLE. The spangram, SILENT LETTER, names the shared pattern.
How Strands hints and the spangram work
Parade’s explanation of the New York Times rules says that theme words remain highlighted once found and together fill the board without overlap. The spangram describes the theme, touches two opposite sides, and can contain two words. Three non-theme words earn a hint that shows letters belonging to a theme word.
A current third-party rules explainer describes the board as 6 by 8, with horizontal, vertical, and diagonal connections allowed; a word can change direction, and a letter can be used at most once in a submitted word. That explainer is not affiliated with The New York Times.
