Spangram: SANDBOXTOYS (SANDBOX TOYS)
Why “Playing dirty” points to sandbox toys
The clue can initially suggest dirt, mess, or rule-breaking. Here, “dirty” means playing in sand: the theme words name familiar tools and toys for a sandbox, while SANDBOXTOYS ties the set together. Forbes describes the same interpretive turn, noting that its writer first considered grime-related words before recognizing the sandbox connection.

Strands is a themed word-search puzzle. Forbes describes a six-by-eight letter grid in which the spangram connects opposite edges and explains how the theme words relate. Try Hard Guides says you can trace letters in any direction, without reusing or crossing them, and that every letter is used once in a completed grid. Finding three words of at least four letters earns an in-game hint that highlights a theme word.
Those mechanics are described by secondary puzzle guides; the official NYT game page was unavailable when these reports were checked. This guide covers the historical June 27, 2025 puzzle, game #481.
