NYT Strands game #193, for September 12, 2024, has the theme clue “This should be right up your alley.” The answers are road-related words, and the spangram is THOROUGHFARE. Hints below move from a light nudge to the full solution, so stop before the spoiler section if you are still solving.

Hints for September 12, 2024

Use these in order, from least to most revealing. The hint words are incidental words you can find on the board to earn in-game help.

  1. Theme clue: “This should be right up your alley.”
  2. Extra clue: It is not about bowling alleys, though one word connects to them.
  3. Incidental words: WHAT, DATA, LAND, FARE, ROAST, and HEAR.
  4. Spangram clue: “Walk this way.”
  5. First-two-letter prompts: HI, AV, ST, RO, LA, BO, TH.
  6. Spangram location: It starts at the top in the third column and ends at the bottom in the sixth column.

Spoiler: the full Strands solution

The six theme words are LANE, STREET, ROAD, AVENUE, HIGHWAY, and BOULEVARD. The spangram is THOROUGHFARE.

Each theme word names a kind of road or route. “Alley” may suggest bowling at first, but the lane connection is only one part of the broader road theme.

How the clues fit together

Strands is a New York Times word-search-style game built around a daily theme. The spangram describes that theme and stretches across opposite sides of the grid. Finding unrelated words can help unlock an in-game hint. This general description comes from a secondary reference, rather than an official NYT rules page.

For this puzzle, the clue’s “right up your alley” phrasing points toward LANE, while the remaining answers broaden the idea to streets, roads, avenues, highways, and boulevards. THOROUGHFARE ties those routes together.

Puzzle identification

This is the September 12, 2024 puzzle, game #193—not a puzzle from another year’s September 12. Contemporaneous guides from TechRadar and Forbes, both published September 11, 2024, agree on the clue and solution. They are secondary sources; an official NYT archive record for this specific historical board was not located.
