Its theme was “Cut and color,” its spangram was JEWELTONES, and its six theme answers were RUBY, SAPPHIRE, EMERALD, GARNET, AMETHYST, and TOPAZ. Hints come first; the full answer set follows.
Hints for the June 30 Strands puzzle
- Theme: Cut and color.
- Hint words reported for unlocking in-game hints: PENT, SHEET, SEEM, SWEET, SWEEP, and WELT.
- Spangram clue: Rock stars.
For another nudge before the reveal, the date-specific TechRadar guide reports that the spangram begins at the left edge in row four and finishes at the right edge in that same row.
What is the spangram?
JEWELTONES is the spangram. It connects the puzzle’s gemstone theme words under the theme “Cut and color.”
What are the June 30 Strands answers?
The complete set of six theme words is:
- RUBY
- SAPPHIRE
- EMERALD
- GARNET
- AMETHYST
- TOPAZ
There is a small mismatch among the published answer lists. TechRadar’s bullet list names five words, omitting RUBY, though its accompanying prose mentions it. Forbes’ accessible list repeats RUBY and omits TOPAZ. The Puzzlesbay archive lists all six words, corroborating the combined set above. These are secondary-source records; an authoritative NYT archive for this exact board is not established by the cited sources.

How Strands works
Strands is a themed word search played on a six-by-eight letter grid. Players trace letters vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, and words can change direction. Theme answers fit the day’s category; the spangram spans opposite sides of the grid and helps express the theme. The current rules page at Strands.Game says that finding three valid non-theme words unlocks a hint; it is a third-party site and says it is not affiliated with The New York Times.
For broader theme variety, Forbes reproduces a statement attributed to The New York Times: “Some themes are fill-in-the-blank phrases. They may also be steps in a process, items that all belong to the same category, synonyms or homophones.”
