“oberontb.dll is missing” means Windows or an older program tried to load oberontb.dll and could not find it. oberontb.dll is historically associated with GamesBar, an Internet Explorer toolbar and Browser Helper Object distributed with some Oberon Media game downloads.
It is not a Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET file, or modern driver. Do not download it from a random DLL website or copy it into System32. The correct fix is usually to remove the obsolete GamesBar installation or repair the original game that installed it.
Which fix applies to you
Use the timing and wording of the error to choose the right path:
- The message appears when Windows starts: GamesBar was probably removed incompletely, leaving a startup, toolbar, or browser reference behind. Start with the uninstall and orphaned-entry cleanup steps.
- The message appears when opening an old game: Repair or reinstall that game from its original installer, trusted installation media, or platform launcher.
- Your antivirus quarantined the file: Do not restore it automatically. Review Protection history, scan the computer, and remove the associated GamesBar software.
- The error began after installing or removing software: Use System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists.
- Other Windows files are also failing: Run DISM and SFC. These repair Windows components, not GamesBar itself.
- The popup identifies an unfamiliar folder: Trace the full path before deleting anything. Another program could be using the same filename.

It was associated with the GamesBarBHO Class Internet Explorer Browser Helper Object, commonly identified by CLSID {CB0D163C-E9F4-4236-9496-0597E24B23A5}. GamesBar could be bundled with casual games and related downloads as a toolbar or browser helper.
That history does not prove that every file named oberontb.dll is authentic. GamesBar has been classified by security resources as obsolete adware or potentially unwanted software in some cases, while classifications can vary by file version and hash. Treat an unexpected copy as untrusted until it has been scanned and identified by its path and originating installer.
The filename alone also cannot tell you whether the file is safe. Historical reports show different sizes and versions, so size is not a reliable authenticity check.
Fix 1: Uninstall GamesBar or the program that installed it
This is the safest first fix when the error appears at startup or in connection with an old browser toolbar.

- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On some Windows 10 builds, select Apps & features.
- Search for GamesBar, Oberon, Oberon Media, or the name of the old game bundle.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft also documents the alternative route through Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Select the suspected program, choose Uninstall, and follow its removal wizard.
If you find the original game but no separate GamesBar entry, uninstalling the game may be the appropriate choice. The toolbar may have been installed as part of that bundle.
How to tell whether this worked
After restarting, check whether:
- The startup popup is gone.
- The old game launches without the missing-file message.
- GamesBar no longer appears in Installed apps.
- The
GamesBarfolder is no longer present underProgram FilesorProgram Files (x86).
Do not manually delete the DLL first if GamesBar is still listed. Let the uninstaller remove its registration and related files.

Fix 2: Remove an orphaned GamesBar reference
Sometimes the DLL has already been deleted, but Windows still tries to load it. This can happen after antivirus quarantine, an incomplete uninstall, registry cleaning, or restoring an old disk image.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →First, read the complete path shown in the error. A path containing GamesBar strongly supports an abandoned GamesBar reference. A different path may belong to an old game or another application.
Check these locations:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for GamesBar, Oberon, an old game launcher, or an entry with an unknown publisher.
- Select the entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the message appears while opening Internet Explorer or a legacy browser component:
- Open Internet Explorer’s Manage Add-ons interface where it is available.
- Select Toolbars and Extensions.
- Find GamesBar or
GamesBarBHO Class. - Choose Disable.
- Restart the browser or Windows.
Do not remove random registry keys based only on a filename search. If the program is already uninstalled and the popup remains, use a reputable system-administration method to identify the exact startup task, scheduled task, shortcut, or add-on that references GamesBar. Export a registry backup before making manual changes.
The desired result is not to restore oberontb.dll. It is to remove the stale reference that requests it.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and scan Windows
If the file disappeared suddenly, Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined it. That may be intentional because GamesBar is obsolete and potentially unwanted.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review any detection involving
oberontb.dll, GamesBar, or the folder shown in the popup. - Do not choose Restore unless you can verify that the file came from a trusted original game installer and the detection is a false positive.
- Return to Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan and select Scan now.
Use Microsoft Defender Offline scan if the detection returns, the file keeps reappearing, browser settings changed unexpectedly, or the security software cannot remove the associated program. The computer will restart and scan from the Windows Recovery Environment, where persistent software has fewer opportunities to hide.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the old game
If the error appears only when launching one specific game, the game may genuinely expect the DLL as part of its original installation.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Use this order:
- Identify the game named in the shortcut, Start menu, or error window.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the game and choose Advanced options if available.
- Try Repair first.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the game.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original publisher, trusted installation media, or the platform launcher where you obtained it.
- Run the game once after installation before adding compatibility tweaks or other modifications.
Do not obtain a standalone replacement from a DLL download site. There is no verified current official Oberon package that should be treated as a general-purpose oberontb.dll download. A replacement from the wrong release or architecture can cause another loading error and may be tampered with.
If the game installer itself is blocked, right-click its executable, select Properties, and check whether an Unblock option appears on the General tab. You can also right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator, but only when the installer came from a trusted source.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent software change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after installing a game, toolbar, cleanup utility, or security product. It can revert installed programs, drivers, registry settings, and system files without removing personal documents.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point dated before the change.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
- Let Windows restart and complete the operation.
System Restore may reinstall the original GamesBar reference along with the old program. If that happens, uninstall GamesBar afterward and run a Defender scan.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Because oberontb.dll is not a protected Windows file, SFC and DISM will not recreate it. Use them when Windows has broader symptoms, such as multiple protected system files failing, broken Settings components, update failures, or unexplained system instability.

- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected game or startup sequence again.
A successful SFC result means Windows repaired or verified protected components. It does not confirm that GamesBar or oberontb.dll has been restored. If the DLL message remains, return to the uninstall, orphaned-reference, or game-reinstallation steps.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows repairs is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the program that owns this DLL remains the definitive fix.
Fix 7: Do not treat this as a driver or Windows Feature problem
oberontb.dll is an application and browser add-on file, not a device driver. Device Manager will not normally repair it.
Recommended Free Tools
If the error started alongside a genuine hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not enable optional Windows Features to replace this DLL. Features such as legacy components may help a very old game run, but they do not supply oberontb.dll. If a legacy game specifically requires a Windows compatibility feature, enable only the feature named by the game’s trusted documentation.
When several devices have stale drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which versions its free scan identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the game that owns oberontb.dll.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
Historical GamesBar entries commonly identify it as 32-bit software under Program Files (x86). That is consistent with its Internet Explorer BHO history.
Do not replace it with a random 64-bit DLL. A 32-bit application needs the correct 32-bit build and its own dependencies. If an authentic installer is available, let that installer place and register the file.
regsvr32 is not a generic DLL repair command. It works only with self-registering COM or ActiveX components that provide DllRegisterServer. Running it against a missing file cannot recreate the file, and running it against a DLL without the required entry point produces an error.

Only use registration when the original application’s trusted installer or documentation explicitly requires it. On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of regsvr32 are separate, so choosing the wrong one can create another failure. For this file, uninstalling GamesBar or reinstalling the original game is normally the correct action.
Prevention after the error is fixed
- Keep GamesBar removed unless a trusted legacy game demonstrably requires it.
- Do not whitelist or restore
oberontb.dllsolely because a popup says it is missing. - Keep Windows Security enabled and review Protection history after installing old software.
- Preserve the original installer for a legacy game instead of downloading individual DLL files.
- Check the full path whenever a new error appears.
GamesBarunder an old program folder suggests a stale legacy installation; an unfamiliar path deserves a scan. - Avoid registry cleaners that may remove files while leaving startup references behind.
FAQ
Is oberontb.dll part of Windows?
No. It is historically associated with GamesBar and Oberon Media game bundles. It is not a Windows system DLL or Microsoft runtime.
Is GamesBar malware?
Not every file with this name can be classified without examining its path, hash, signature, and installer. GamesBar is obsolete and has been treated as adware or potentially unwanted software in historical security reports, so scan it rather than trusting it automatically.
Should I copy oberontb.dll into System32?
No. That can introduce the wrong architecture, an incompatible release, or a malicious file, while leaving the original GamesBar registration unresolved.
Why did the error start after uninstalling a game?
The game may have been removed without clearing its toolbar, Browser Helper Object, startup entry, or shortcut. Disable and remove the remaining reference instead of restoring the DLL.
Will SFC fix oberontb.dll?
No. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are appropriate only when Windows has separate corruption symptoms.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the error appears only during startup?
Inspect the full path, Task Manager’s Startup apps, scheduled tasks, shortcuts, and any remaining GamesBar add-on. The most likely cause is an orphaned reference.
What if the old game still needs the file?
Use the game’s Repair option or reinstall it from its original publisher, trusted media, or platform launcher. Do not install a loose DLL from an unverified download page.
