puiobj.dll may appear in errors such as “puiobj.dll is missing,” “The specified module could not be found,” or “puiobj.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called PrintUI Objects DLL, used by the Windows printer user-interface and PrintUI subsystem.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. The safest repair is to update and restart Windows, then run DISM followed by System File Checker. If the error started after a printer change, driver installation, security cleanup, or failed update, the later steps below address those causes.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches what you are seeing:
- The message names
C:WindowsSystem32puiobj.dllorC:WindowsSysWOW64puiobj.dll: repair Windows with DISM and SFC first. - The problem began after Windows Update, a feature upgrade, or a hard shutdown: install pending updates, restart, then run the Windows repair commands.
- The error appears only when adding, removing, or configuring a printer: remove and reinstall the affected printer and its driver.
- Your antivirus recently quarantined a file: check its quarantine history, but restore a file only after verifying its location and Microsoft signature.
- The error names an application folder instead of a Windows folder: repair or reinstall that application, while remembering that
puiobj.dllitself is normally a Windows print component. - The message says “Bad Image” or “not designed to run on Windows”: suspect corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a damaged dependency rather than a simple missing file.
- DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows: try System Restore or a Windows repair-reinstall before considering a full reset.
What is puiobj.dll

It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX component, or .NET runtime. Installing those packages solely because an error mentions puiobj.dll usually addresses the wrong problem.
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
C:WindowsSystem32puiobj.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64puiobj.dll
System32 contains the native 64-bit system component. SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit compatibility copy. On 32-bit Windows, the component normally resides in C:WindowsSystem32.
The copies are built for different architectures. A 32-bit program needs the x86 dependency chain, while a 64-bit process needs the x64 chain. Do not replace one architecture with the other.
A filename and location alone do not prove authenticity. Verify the local file’s digital signature before trusting it.
Fix 1: Install updates, restart, and repair Windows
This is the best first repair when the error names a Windows directory or affects printer configuration.
1. Install pending updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
An interrupted update can leave a system component incomplete or mismatched. Updating first gives DISM a better chance of using the correct repair source.
2. Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Look for a message indicating that the restore operation completed successfully.
3. Run SFC
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not detect corrupted protected files. Continue with the printer and dependency checks below if the error remains.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the affected printer or program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart once and run SFC again. If it still fails, continue to the escalation section.
Restart after SFC completes, even when it reports that no violations were found.

Repeatedly running repair commands without knowing whether anything changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the condition behind the failure and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not required for this repair.
Fix 2: Repair the printer installation
Use this path when the error appears while adding, removing, or managing a printer.
Remove the affected printer
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Click Remove and confirm.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer.
- Click Remove device and confirm.
Restart Windows after removing it.
Install the correct driver
Download the current Windows driver from the printer manufacturer’s official support page, selecting the correct Windows release and processor architecture. Avoid driver packages copied from another computer or intended for a different Windows version.
Then:
- Run the manufacturer’s installer.
- Follow its connection instructions.
- If Windows asks whether to allow the driver, confirm only when the publisher and package are expected.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Print a test page from the printer’s properties.
If the installer fails or the error returns immediately, run DISM and SFC again, then check whether the printer software installed a separate management application. Repair or reinstall that application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.

Fix 3: Update or reinstall the printer driver
A damaged or incompatible driver can make the PrintUI chain fail even when puiobj.dll is present.

Remove the device in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on how the printer appears.
- Right-click the affected printer.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are intentionally removing that printer’s package.
- Confirm and restart.
Install the current driver from the printer manufacturer, then add the printer again through Settings > Printers & scanners.
Guessing which of several old printer packages is responsible can take longer than the repair itself. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the driver condition; the actual driver installation and repair require the full version, and reinstalling the manufacturer’s official package remains the definitive route for a damaged printer installation.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a legitimate Windows file after a mistaken detection or during malware cleanup.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
puiobj.dll. - Record the detected path and action before changing anything.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- It was located in the expected Windows directory.
- Its publisher can be verified as Microsoft Corporation.
- A full malware scan finds no broader compromise.
- The detection is clearly a false positive or a known cleanup event.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to download a replacement DLL. If the file was restored, run DISM and SFC afterward so Windows can validate and service it.
Fix 5: Repair an affected application
If the error appears only when launching a particular program and the dialog names that program’s directory, repair the application rather than copying puiobj.dll into its folder.

For a Microsoft Store or supported Windows application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Click Repair.
- Test the program.
- If it still fails, use Reset only if you accept that the app’s local data may be removed.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. Do not assume that a program-specific copy of this file is correct merely because the error appeared during that program’s launch.
Understand “module was not found”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that puiobj.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load one of its dependencies, such as another PrintUI component or a required system library.
Check the following:
- The exact path shown in the dialog.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the matching x86 or x64 Windows component exists.
- Whether the problem began after a printer-driver change.
- Whether DISM and SFC completed successfully.
Do not copy an x86 file into a 64-bit location or an x64 file into a 32-bit application directory. That can turn a missing-file message into a Bad Image error.

A message saying that puiobj.dll is “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” generally indicates an invalid or corrupted image. The commonly associated status is 0xC000007B, but the exact status must come from your own dialog or event log.
Common causes include:
- A damaged Windows component.
- An incomplete update.
- A wrong-architecture DLL.
- A damaged dependency.
- Storage corruption.
- Malware removal or security-software quarantine.
Run DISM and SFC first. If the message names an application folder, repair that application as well. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a general solution for this Windows print component.
Verify location and Microsoft signature
To inspect the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Right-click
puiobj.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and check the description, version, and product information.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft Corporation.
If the file is in a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unexpected application folder, do not run or register it. Let Windows repair the protected copy instead.

regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the appropriate registration entry points. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing every missing DLL.

Although some inspected builds of puiobj.dll expose DllRegisterServer, there is no general Microsoft repair procedure that says manually registering this Windows component fixes missing, corrupted, or Bad Image errors. Running the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32 can add confusing registration errors without repairing the underlying file.
Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and printer reinstallation instead.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair it
First restart and run SFC once more. If corruption remains:
- Open Event Viewer from the Start menu.
- Check Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application around the time of the failure.
- Note the executable named in the error and any accompanying module.
- Check Windows Security’s protection history.
- Check available disk space and back up important files.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may schedule the check for the next restart. Accept that prompt, restart, and allow the scan to finish.

System Restore rolls back system files and settings, not personal documents.
On supported Windows 11 systems, try Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. If that option is unavailable or unsuccessful, use Windows installation media for an in-place repair, or consider Reset or reinstalling Windows after backing up your data.
Prevention
- Keep Windows updated and restart after major updates.
- Use printer drivers intended for your Windows version and architecture.
- Remove obsolete printer software instead of repeatedly layering new packages over it.
- Keep security software enabled and review quarantine history before restoring system files.
- Do not use DLL download sites sites or copy system DLLs between computers.
- Keep backups so System Restore, repair-reinstall, or a reset remains practical if storage corruption worsens.
FAQ
Is puiobj.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is the Microsoft Windows PrintUI Objects DLL, a component of Windows printer-management infrastructure. Verify the signature on the local file rather than trusting the filename alone.
Where should puiobj.dll be located?
On 64-bit Windows, the native copy normally belongs in C:WindowsSystem32, while the 32-bit compatibility copy normally belongs in C:WindowsSysWOW64. On 32-bit Windows, it normally belongs in C:WindowsSystem32.
Should I download puiobj.dll?
No. There is no official standalone puiobj.dll redistributable. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or an official Windows repair option.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not. puiobj.dll is a Windows PrintUI component, not one of those runtime packages.
Can I fix it with regsvr32 puiobj.dll?
That is not the normal repair method. Registration does not replace a missing file, repair corruption, or restore a missing dependency.

What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
The message may refer to a dependency rather than the named file. Check architecture, printer drivers, the exact executable in the dialog, Event Viewer, and the results of DISM and SFC.
