To make a custom spell in Oblivion Remastered, activate a spellmaking altar, choose effects your character knows and can cast, then set the spell’s range, magnitude, area, and duration. Check the displayed gold cost, Magicka cost, and required skill before creating it. Frostcrag Spire is a Remastered altar route; the Arcane University route is also documented in the original game manual.
How to unlock spellmaking
You need access to an Altar of Spellmaking. Remastered-specific guidance describes an activation route at Frostcrag Spire, while the original Oblivion PC manual describes access through Mages Guild rank at the Arcane University’s Praxographical Center. These are distinct routes, and the manual’s instructions should not be taken as proof that Guild progression is the only Remastered option.

How to create a custom spell

Activate an Altar of Spellmaking and choose an effect your character already knows. The Remastered guide also says you must be able to cast that effect; improving the relevant magic skill may expand what you can use.

Choose a range: Self affects your character, Touch affects a nearby target, and Target sends the spell at a target at range.

Adjust the available settings for each effect. Magnitude controls strength, duration controls how long the effect lasts, and area controls its coverage when available. A spell can combine two or more effects.

Review the altar’s displayed gold creation cost, Magicka cost, and required skill. These values depend on the effects and settings you chose.

Create the spell only if you can afford its Magicka cost and meet its required skill. Bethesda Softworks’ original manual warns against making spells whose cost exceeds your Magicka pool or whose skill requirement exceeds your skill.
Why can’t I select an effect or change categories?
First check whether your character knows the effect and can cast it. If the effect should be available but the altar controls do not respond, the problem may be an input or menu issue rather than a spellmaking rule.

Try pressing the Name button early, before confirming the effects.

Create and reload a save, or load a save from before entering the area.

Fast travel away and return. Bethesda Support notes that waiting three in-game days may sometimes be part of this workaround.

Restart the game. If you use mods, disable or remove them temporarily to check whether they are contributing to the issue.
Spellmaking basics and practical limits
Known, usable effects are the building blocks of custom spells; an altar does not grant effects your character lacks. For each effect, the available choices and settings determine what the spell does. The altar’s cost and skill displays are practical checks, not optional details: more potency, coverage, or duration can affect affordability.
There is no universally best spell recipe established by the available research. A useful design depends on your character, the effect, the intended purpose, and the values shown at the altar. Start with one effect, inspect the cost and requirement, and then add or adjust settings while checking how the displayed values change.

Spellmaking creates castable spells. It is separate from potion-making, which is a different crafting activity and does not use the Altar of Spellmaking.

Do I have to complete the Mages Guild recommendations to make spells in Remastered?
Not necessarily. A Remastered guide describes activating the altar at Frostcrag Spire with Magetallow Candles Boxes as an alternative to advancing through the Mages Guild. The original PC manual describes the Guild-rank route to the Arcane University altar.
What do I need to select an effect at the altar?
You need to know the effect, and Remastered guidance says your character must also be able to cast it. If an otherwise available effect cannot be selected, check for a menu or input problem and try Bethesda Support’s troubleshooting steps.
What do the altar’s cost and skill values mean?
The interface displays the gold cost to create the spell, its Magicka cost to cast, and the skill required. Check that the Magicka cost fits your pool and that your skill meets the requirement before creating the spell.
Can I make potions at a spellmaking altar?
No. The altar is for creating castable spells. Potion-making is a separate activity.
Was the spellmaking menu issue fixed?
Bethesda Game Studios’ Update 1.2 notes dated July 16, 2025 list a fix for controller issues in the spellmaking menu. If selection still fails, update the game and try the troubleshooting steps above; the cited notes do not establish the latest fix status on every platform.
