The screenshots that prompted the April 2025 headline were reported as leaked images, not an official confirmation; Bethesda announced the game as available on April 22, 2025. It launched on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Game Pass, with Nintendo Switch 2 availability added later.
What the leaked screenshots showed
On April 15, 2025, Game Informer reported that screenshots and key art said to be from the rumored remaster were circulating on social media and forums. The images included before-and-after comparisons of the original game and updated visuals, as well as art associated with a Deluxe Edition.
That report described the images as a leak; it did not establish their provenance through independent forensic authentication. Game Informer said Bethesda and Virtuos had not responded at publication time. The later official announcement confirms the game existed, but it does not by itself prove who first shared those particular files or authenticate every image in the leak.

What “remastered” means in this version
Bethesda describes the project as a collaboration with Virtuos. Unreal Engine 5 provides the visual overhaul, while the original game’s underlying logic continues to power gameplay and world systems. Bethesda Game Studios characterized the aim as preserving the original rather than remaking it: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.”
The official feature overview describes refreshed landscapes and character models, improved lip syncing, atmospheric effects, remade assets, real-time lighting, sprinting, rebuilt locomotion and combat animations, a more modern third-person perspective, redesigned leveling, updated interface elements, and newly recorded dialogue. These are Bethesda’s descriptions of the changes, not independent measurements of image quality or performance. In its extended look, Virtuos Executive Producer Alex Mur-phy put the project’s intent this way: “Oblivion is the heart and soul of the Remaster.”

Bethesda’s extended look explains the studio’s stated approach. Xbox Wire’s April 22, 2025 launch overview additionally describes 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, along with updated textures, lighting, landscapes, animations, dynamic time-of-day and weather, revised HUD, menus and map, changes to leveling and encumbrance, improved enemy scaling, accessibility features, autosaves, and revised cameras. That coverage should not be read as a guarantee that every platform has identical resolution, frame rate, or presentation.
