For a first playthrough, a custom battlemage is a forgiving mage build: use Destruction for direct damage, Restoration to recover, Alteration for defense, and Conjuration for an ally or magical weapon. Add armor and Block if you want more room to survive close encounters. A pure mage can lean harder into spellcasting, but has less margin for mistakes early on and needs to manage Magicka carefully.
Choose the mage style that fits how you want to fight
There is no universally best mage build. The right choice depends on whether you want to stand your ground, stay mobile, or let summoned allies take the pressure. The options below are recommendations from The Wizard’s Tower’s build guide, updated April 2026, not measured performance rankings.

Build a custom battlemage for a first playthrough
Character creation combines race, birthsign, and class. A custom class lets you choose a specialization, favored attributes, and seven major skills; those choices shape how the character develops. Bethesda’s leveling guidance explains the mechanics, while The Wizard’s Tower guide offers build-planning advice.
Pick attributes for both spellcasting and survival
Intelligence and Willpower do different jobs: Bethesda says Intelligence affects total Magicka, while Willpower affects Magicka regeneration and magic resistance. The Wizard’s Tower guide maps Intelligence to Alchemy, Conjuration, and Mysticism, and Willpower to Alteration, Destruction, and Restoration. It also advises pure spellcasters not to neglect Endurance early because it affects health gains. Treat that Endurance point as strategy advice from the guide, rather than a character-creation rule from Bethesda.

Choose major skills with leveling in mind
For the battlemage’s core, prioritize skills that support your intended combat loop: Destruction for offense, Restoration for healing and fortifying, Alteration for effects such as Shield, and Conjuration for summons and magical weapons. Bethesda describes Illusion as mind-affecting magic, Mysticism as manipulation of magical forces, and Alchemy as potion and poison making. Add armor, Block, or a weapon skill if you want a more physical fallback, but remember that your custom class has seven major-skill slots total.
A custom class does not need to make every useful skill a major skill. Since major and minor skills increase through use, choose major skills that match the character you want to develop and keep an eye on how quickly your combat abilities are advancing alongside them.
Understand leveling before you commit to a specialist build
Using skills prepares a level-up; sleeping completes it. When you level, Bethesda’s guidance records 12 Virtue Points per level, up to five points in one attribute per level, and increases to up to three attributes per level. Those are mechanics figures in Bethesda Support’s 2026 guidance, not performance statistics.
Leveling also affects the opposition: Bethesda warns that enemies scale with your level and advises improving a mix of combat, magic, and stealth skills so you do not become too weak to fight. In practical terms, avoid letting non-combat skill use carry your character upward while your damage and ability to survive a fight lag behind. Plan your attribute choices around the skills you actually use, rather than assuming every level-up can repair a neglected area.

Use the magic schools for distinct jobs
- Destruction: Offensive magic for direct spell damage.
- Restoration: Healing and fortifying effects.
- Alteration: Utility and defense, including effects such as Shield and Water Breathing.
- Conjuration: Summons and magical weapons; useful for drawing pressure away from a fragile caster or adding a close-range option.
- Illusion: Effects that influence minds.
- Mysticism: Manipulation of magical forces.
- Alchemy: Making potions and poisons.
For a flexible battlemage, Destruction, Restoration, Alteration, and Conjuration cover offense, recovery, defense, and support. A spell-first build can emphasize magic more heavily; a spellsword can trade some spell focus for weapon capability. These are role choices, not claims that one combination has the highest damage.

Pure mage
Choose this path if you want spellcasting to define nearly every fight. Its ceiling is high according to The Wizard’s Tower guide, but the early game is less forgiving. Give thought to health gains and the difference between Intelligence and Willpower, and avoid relying on spell damage alone to solve every encounter.
Spellsword
Choose a spellsword if you want a mobile character with a weapon to fall back on when enemies close the distance. The cost is divided priorities: weapon needs compete with magic for attribute and skill development.
Summoner
Choose a summon-focused approach if you prefer allies and ranged control over personally taking every exchange. Conjuration supplies summons and magical weapons. The guide specifically cautions that reanimation near guards can be criminal, so keep that limitation in mind when choosing where to use a necromancer-style approach.

Is there a physical edition?
Bethesda confirms a Physical Deluxe Edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X. The disc grants access to the base game, but an additional download is required; digital extras are supplied by a code. Check the platform listing and current availability before buying, since a September 30, 2025 preorder report does not establish present stock. Bethesda’s edition FAQ has the edition details; 9to5Toys reported the preorder listings.
