In Oblivion Remastered, skills improve through use, but improving a skill and leveling up your character are separate steps. Skills progress through five ranks—Novice, Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, and Master—while character level-ups are completed by sleeping after the level-up indicator appears.
How skills and character leveling work
Using skills contributes experience in Oblivion Remastered. Bethesda’s support guidance says a bronze logo appears at the top right of the screen when it is time to level up; you must then sleep to complete the character level-up. Bethesda also notes that a higher skill level grants more experience. Bethesda Support: leveling in Oblivion Remastered and Bethesda’s Remastered tips describe these practical rules.
At a level-up, you can increase up to three different attributes, assigning up to five points to any one attribute. Bethesda’s guidance does not establish a flat total number of points for every level-up, so plan around those two limits rather than assuming a fixed total.
The five skill proficiency ranks
A current GameSpot guide lists 21 skills across combat, magic, and stealth, with five proficiency ranks. The thresholds below are the rank cutoffs reported by that guide; each skill has its own rank benefits.

| Rank | Skill threshold |
|---|---|
| Novice | Below 25 |
| Apprentice | 25 |
| Journeyman | 50 |
| Expert | 75 |
| Master | 100 |
These are skill ranks, not character levels. Reaching a rank grants benefits specific to that skill; it does not by itself complete the character level-up process. GameSpot’s Oblivion Remastered guide summarizes the count, ranks, and thresholds.
Armor skills and practical benefits
Armor skill perks can reduce the weight of the armor you wear, according to Bethesda’s official tips. Skill progression can therefore affect how you play beyond simply reaching a higher rank: check the relevant skill’s perk descriptions in-game to see what each rank unlocks.

What changed from the original Oblivion?
Bethesda describes the Remastered leveling system as redesigned and inspired by both the original Oblivion and Skyrim. That is a high-level design description, not a complete specification of every formula. Bethesda’s Remastered design overview supports treating the current system on its own terms.
The original PC manual’s Skills interface includes Major Skills, Minor Skills, skill modifiers, skill progress, and level progress. Those labels explain why returning players may expect the original system, but the manual documents the original-era interface—not the Remastered rules. The original Oblivion PC manual is historical context, not a guide to Remastered leveling.
