If OBS is dropping frames during a 4K/2160p, 60 fps YouTube stream, first find out which OBS counter is rising. For network dropped frames, lower the bitrate to what your connection can sustain and test the route to YouTube. For rendering lag or encoding lag, reduce the workload on your GPU or encoder—often by lowering output resolution or frame rate and simplifying the scene. These are different problems and need different fixes.
First identify which frames are being lost
OBS uses “dropped frames” for a connection to the streaming server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Rendering lag and encoding lag instead indicate that the computer is struggling to render or encode the stream. A viewer reporting buffering does not, by itself, tell you which problem is happening.
- Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections: check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator. Start with the network steps below.
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot render frames quickly enough. Reduce the load from the captured game or application, scene, output resolution, or frame rate.
- Encoding lag: OBS cannot encode frames quickly enough. Reduce output demands and review whether the encoder and workload suit your system.
- Viewer buffering while OBS counters remain clear: investigate viewer accessibility and YouTube stream health rather than assuming OBS is dropping frames.
Check the OBS Stats panel and the connection indicator while the problem is occurring. If you need a machine-specific diagnosis, the relevant evidence includes the OBS log, Stats readings, hardware, OBS version, output settings, and a measurement of stable upload capacity.
Fix network dropped frames without guessing
- Lower the video bitrate. Set it to a rate your connection can sustain consistently, not merely a peak speed from a brief speed test. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as an initial troubleshooting heuristic; leave room for upload variation and audio, and treat the result as a starting point rather than a guarantee.
- Try a different YouTube ingest server. A different route may help if the current connection to the ingest server is unstable.
- Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi instability can contribute to dropped frames. A wired connection is a useful diagnostic, not a guarantee against ISP, modem/router, or routing problems. If you can connect the streaming PC to the router, trying a suitable Ethernet cable is a low-risk test.
- Check software and drivers. Temporarily test whether a VPN, security software, or network-prioritization or “optimization” utility is interfering. OBS gives Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples, not a complete list. Check for old network drivers as well.
- Check the modem/router connection. Look for instability beyond OBS, such as other devices losing connectivity or upload performance varying sharply.
- On Windows, test OBS network options. OBS recommends trying Network Optimizations and TCP pacing. Leave Bind to IP at Default; if needed, test IPv4 Only, then restore IPv4/IPv6 if it does not help.
- Use Dynamic Bitrate only as a fallback. It can lower the bitrate during congestion and reduce interruptions, but picture quality also falls. It does not repair the underlying connection issue.
Change one likely cause at a time and observe whether the relevant counter improves. That makes it easier to identify what actually helped.

Choose a bitrate for 4K/2160p at 60 fps
YouTube’s live encoder guidance retrieved in 2026 gives different 4K60 bitrate recommendations by codec. They are platform targets for picture quality, not a requirement to push more data than your upload connection can reliably carry.
| Codec | YouTube’s recommended 4K60 bitrate | YouTube’s listed minimum | Other relevant guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps | SDR guidance lists Rec. 709. |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps | For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265; AV1 is not supported for HDR. |
If the recommended rate is unstable on your connection, lower the bitrate and, if necessary, reduce resolution or frame rate until the stream is reliable. A lower stable stream is more useful than a 4K60 stream that repeatedly drops frames. Use only a codec supported by your installed OBS version, encoder hardware, and YouTube workflow.

Check the YouTube encoder settings that affect stability
- Rate control: YouTube lists CBR.
- Keyframes: use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Color and HDR: YouTube lists Rec. 709 for SDR, recommends H.265 for HDR, and does not support AV1 for HDR.
These settings do not compensate for inadequate upload capacity or local rendering/encoding overload. If you are streaming 4K, note that YouTube’s guidance says 4K/2160p streams do not have the “improve for low latency” option and use normal latency.
When the problem is rendering or encoding lag
If OBS’s rendering-lag or encoding-lag counter is increasing rather than the network dropped-frame counter, changing the upload route is unlikely to address the main cause. Reduce the work OBS and the captured game or application must do.

- Lower the output resolution or frame rate. Try a less demanding output before changing the source or rebuilding the scene. OBS says trying 30 fps is reasonable when 60 fps is not working.
- Reduce load from the captured game or application. Leave GPU capacity for OBS rather than asking the game and stream to compete for all available resources.
- Simplify the scene. Remove or reduce demanding sources and effects, then check whether rendering or encoding lag falls.
- Only consider reducing Base (Canvas) Resolution when resources are severely constrained. It is more disruptive because sources may need repositioning, and OBS does not generally recommend it as the first move.
Encoder settings and performance depend on OBS version, GPU generation, and workload. For example, OBS 31.0’s NVENC documentation describes split encode for NVIDIA Ada-generation GPUs with at least two NVENC engines (4070 Ti or higher in the cited guide). OBS says it is automatically used with specified fast presets above 2160p; it is specialist context, not a reason to force advanced options for a generic dropped-frames problem.
Separate OBS drops from viewer buffering
Viewers can experience loading or playback problems even when OBS has not dropped frames. A high bitrate, resolution, or frame rate can be difficult for some viewers’ connections or devices. YouTube transcodes live streams according to its platform guidance, but lowering the stream’s bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or overall quality can make it more accessible. First check the OBS counters and YouTube stream health rather than diagnosing OBS from viewer complaints alone.

Run a representative test before going live
- Stream a test with the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, scenes, and representative game or application motion you plan to use.
- Watch OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame, rendering-lag, and encoding-lag counters throughout the test.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages as well as OBS; a clean result in one place does not replace checking the other.
- If the issue persists, keep the OBS log and note the Stats readings, hardware, OBS version, output settings, and measured stable upload rate before changing another setting.
