OBS Media Playlist Plugin vs. VLC Playlist for 4K 60fps YouTube Live

For OBS playlists, VLC Video is the straightforward built-in choice for ordered files; Media Source suits one looping file. Neither guarantees a 4K/60 YouTube stream.

For a fixed, ordered playlist in OBS, start with the built-in VLC Video source. It requires VLC to be installed, with the same architecture as OBS. For one repeating file, use OBS Media Source instead. The Media Playlist Source plugin is an optional alternative when its playlist-editing or restart-persistence features matter and it is compatible with your OBS version. None of these choices makes a YouTube stream 4K at 60 fps by itself: playback source, encoder settings, computer capacity and upload connection are separate parts of the setup.

Which OBS source should you choose?

Your need Best fit Why
Repeat one local video file OBS Media Source It is the direct file-source option and includes a Loop setting.
Play multiple files in a fixed order OBS VLC Video It is OBS’s built-in playlist source; turn shuffle off and enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat.
Edit a playlist while it is playing or restore the current file after OBS restarts Media Playlist Source plugin The plugin listing describes those behaviors. Check current compatibility before depending on it for a broadcast.

There is no documented or controlled comparison showing that the plugin or VLC source performs better at 4K/60. Choose on workflow and compatibility, then test the full stream on your own system.

Do you need VLC for an OBS playlist?

Yes, for the built-in VLC Video source. OBS’s Media Sources guide says VLC Video requires VLC to be installed to appear as a source in OBS. Match application architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC is missing or the architectures do not match, install the appropriate VLC build and reopen OBS.

The OBS guide, dated 2022-01-11, lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM for video files in Media Source, and MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV for audio. Check behavior with your installed OBS version and actual media files, especially if a file uses an unusual codec or container.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up an ordered playlist with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC first. Use a build matching OBS’s architecture; restart OBS if VLC Video is not available after installation.
  2. Add the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene and add the media files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
  3. Set playlist behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence. Enable Loop Playlist if the playlist should start over after its last item. OBS documentation shows shuffle off and loop on as defaults, but confirm the settings in your installed build.
  4. Check sound and visuals. Preview each file in the scene. Verify that video fits the intended canvas, audio is audible at an appropriate level, and transitions between playlist items work as expected.
  5. Test through YouTube before going live. Run an end-to-end test with the intended scene, encoder and connection. Check the stream preview and health indicators, including audio and motion, rather than relying only on OBS’s local preview.

OBS documents a 400 ms network-caching setting for VLC Video. It is relevant to network media; it is not evidence that VLC improves local-file 4K performance.

When does the Media Playlist Source plugin make sense?

The plugin is a separate option, not a prerequisite for making a playlist in OBS. Its resource listing describes editing playlist contents and settings without restarting playback, restoring the current file when OBS restarts, and shuffle based on VLC 4’s implementation.

The listing identifies Media Playlist Source 0.1.3, creation date 2023-08-08, minimum OBS Studio version 30.0.0, 64-bit support, and Windows, macOS and Linux. Those are listing details, not a guarantee that a current OBS build and current plugin release work together. Before installing, check the live plugin listing and its linked repository for the latest release, platform build, requirements and installation notes. Test it on the exact OBS installation you plan to use before relying on it for a live event.

Will a playlist source make YouTube stream in 4K at 60 fps?

No. The source decides how OBS plays media; YouTube output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and keyframes are configured in your encoder and live-stream workflow. YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance recommends these video bitrates for 4K/2160p at 60 fps:

Encoder codec YouTube’s recommended bitrate for 4K/2160p at 60 fps
AV1 or H.265 35 Mbps
H.264 50 Mbps

YouTube also recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for the stream connection. Follow the current encoder instructions for your chosen software and check YouTube’s guidance again before broadcasting, because settings can change.

YouTube says it detects encoder settings automatically by default and transcodes live video for different viewers. That does not remove the need to send a stable source stream at your intended settings. The recommended bitrate is not a guarantee of smooth output: the encoder must sustain the workload, and upload capacity must be sufficient and stable.

Test the complete 4K/60 workflow

  1. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR mode and keyframe interval in OBS’s output/streaming settings, following YouTube’s current guidance for the codec selected.
  2. Confirm the OBS scene and source are producing the intended picture and audio. A 4K file in the playlist does not prove that the outgoing stream is 4K.
  3. Start a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate for your channel workflow, and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream health. Check motion, audio, dropped frames and stability over enough time to exercise the actual playlist.
  4. If the stream is unstable, reduce the load or diagnose the encoder and connection before the real broadcast. Do not assume changing playlist sources will fix an encoder or upload-capacity problem.

YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance says the 4K low-latency option is unavailable; 4K streams use normal latency.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video does not appear in OBS: install VLC, confirm 32/64-bit architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC), then reopen OBS.
  • Playlist order changes unexpectedly: turn off Shuffle Playlist and verify the order of files in the source.
  • The sequence stops after the last video: enable Loop Playlist if you want it to repeat.
  • The plugin will not load or behave as expected: verify its current OBS minimum version, platform build and release notes against your installed OBS. Test before the event; the resource listing is not a compatibility guarantee for every current build.
  • YouTube does not receive 4K/60: inspect OBS output settings and YouTube’s detected stream information. The playlist source does not set outgoing resolution or frame rate.
  • Video stutters or the stream health degrades: check encoder load and upload stability against the chosen codec’s recommended bitrate. A bitrate target alone cannot show that your system and network can sustain it.
  • Audio is missing or mismatched between files: inspect the source’s audio routing and each file in the preview, then repeat the end-to-end test.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without leaving a PC and OBS on, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
