Check YouTube’s stream health, test sustained upload capacity, and then investigate scene rendering or the encoder if the OBS statistics or log directs you there. Without your Mac mini model, OBS log, and stream settings, there is no basis to conclude that the computer is underpowered.
Identify which kind of frames OBS is dropping
Open OBS’s Stats window while the stream is running and note which counter rises. Check the OBS log for a corresponding warning, and compare it with the connection and stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. A smooth local preview does not establish that the route to YouTube’s ingest server is stable.
- Network dropped frames: OBS defines these as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. This points first to the network path, not proof of an OBS or Mac performance problem. OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
- Rendering lag: OBS is having trouble compositing or rendering the scene. Complex scenes, numerous sources or filters, large browser sources, and competing GPU workloads can contribute. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
- Encoder overload: The selected encoder cannot keep up with the encoding workload, or the encoder choice is incompatible with the Mac’s architecture. Check the log and the encoder options available in your OBS installation. OBS hardware encoding guidance.
More than one problem can occur at once. Diagnose the counter and log evidence rather than treating every dropped-frame warning as a CPU or GPU issue.
Fix network-dropped frames first
If the network counter is rising, compare the configured stream bitrate with sustained upload capacity on the connection used by the Mac mini. A download-speed result is not enough. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate; shared networks may restrict the bandwidth available to one stream even when the total connection looks fast. - Try Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi‑Fi may be unstable. If you already use Ethernet, inspect the cable and try a known-good replacement when possible.
- Check the path between the Mac and the router. OBS lists a faulty modem, router, cable, network interface, switch, or extender as possible causes. Test without unnecessary network intermediaries where practical.
- Rule out software interference. A VPN or network/security software can interfere with the connection. Temporarily test without it if doing so is safe for your network and use case.
- Ask your ISP if the problem persists. If the OBS network troubleshooting steps do not resolve it, OBS recommends contacting the ISP.
OBS documents its Network Optimizations and TCP pacing options as Windows-only; they are not Mac troubleshooting settings. Dynamic bitrate adjustment is a fallback OBS describes when the underlying connection issue cannot be fixed. It can lower picture quality and does not repair the network fault. Check YouTube’s ingest settings against the available upload
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include these examples:

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Mac mini or connection can sustain the bitrate. The relevant recommendation depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. If upload headroom is insufficient, test a lower bitrate or output setting and judge the result using OBS statistics and YouTube stream health. Investigate rendering lag and encoder overload
If the rendering counter rises
Look for scene complexity and GPU competition before assuming the Mac mini needs replacement. OBS recommends checking Activity Monitor on macOS for programs using substantial GPU resources, then simplifying scenes and reducing source loads. If needed, lower output resolution or frame rate; OBS notes that moving from 60 fps to 30 fps can reduce rendering and encoding work. Test changes with the actual scenes that will run continuously. If the encoder counter rises
Check Apple menu > About This Mac to establish whether the Mac mini uses Apple silicon or Intel, then inspect OBS’s encoder choices and log. OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox streaming with H.264 on Apple silicon Macs. Its guidance says streaming through Apple VideoToolbox is not supported on Intel Macs because of constant-bitrate requirements, and tells Intel Mac users to use x264. Do not apply one encoder recommendation to every Mac mini architecture. OBS hardware encoding guidance.
Plan for a 24/7 stream’s archive separately
YouTube says a live stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but one that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the broadcast must be preserved, make and verify a local recording rather than relying on YouTube’s automatic archive. A local recording uses storage and adds system workload, so include recording in the representative stability test. The available platform guidance does not establish how much storage a particular stream needs or whether a given Mac mini can reliably stream and record simultaneously. YouTube: Archive live streams.

A Cat6 Ethernet cable is worth considering only if you need a wired connection or have a suspect cable. Replacing a cable cannot fix ISP congestion, a faulty router, rendering lag, or encoder overload.
