First identify where the skipping happens: an increasing Dropped Frames (Network) counter points to the connection; rendering or encoding lag points to OBS performance; buffering reported only by viewers is a playback issue; and a video that visibly jumps or stops in OBS points to the media source. These problems have different fixes, so check the symptom before changing settings.
Identify what is skipping
Watch the stream in OBS and check View > Stats. Note which counters change and whether the issue starts immediately or only after the stream has been running for a while. Also check whether the problem appears in the OBS preview, YouTube’s stream health, viewer playback, or only in the media source.
- Network-dropped frames increase: OBS is having trouble maintaining its connection to YouTube’s ingest server at the configured bitrate.
- Rendering or encoding lag appears: OBS may not have enough GPU or encoder capacity for its scenes, sources, filters, or other workload.
- OBS looks healthy, but viewers report buffering: investigate viewer playback separately; their device, network, or location may be the limiting factor.
- The source itself jumps, freezes, or reaches the end: investigate the media source and its loop or restart behavior. The OBS network and performance checks below cannot identify a source-specific cause without knowing the source type and configuration.
Record the relevant OBS counter, the source type, whether the problem is continuous, and when it begins. That information helps distinguish a stream-delivery fault from a media playback fault.
If OBS is dropping network frames
OBS says network-dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Too many drops can disconnect the stream. Start with the connection and bitrate rather than reducing scene complexity. See the OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check upload capacity and lower the bitrate if necessary. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not as a guarantee. Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain consistently, including when other devices are using the network.
- Use wired Ethernet if available. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A wired connection is a useful test for network-related drops, but it will not fix rendering or encoding lag.
- Test a different ingest server or service setting if available. Treat this as a diagnostic: if the connection improves, the original route or server may have been involved.
- Check for network interference. VPNs, firewalls or security software, network “optimization” utilities, and outdated network drivers can contribute to connection problems. Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
- On Windows, try OBS’s documented network options if the basic checks fail. OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report helping. It also suggests checking Bind to IP; if needed, test IPv4-only, then restore IPv4/IPv6 if it does not improve the connection.
- Ask your ISP about persistent problems. Congestion or routing beyond your home network may be outside your control.
OBS offers dynamic bitrate adjustment as a fallback during congestion. It may help keep a stream connected, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce video quality.
If rendering or encoding is lagging
OBS uses GPU resources to compose and render scenes. Demanding sources, filters, complex scenes, and other GPU-heavy work can leave too little capacity for the stream. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide was dated 2021; its steps are diagnostic adjustments, not guaranteed fixes for every computer.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Reduce GPU load. Close applications you know are using substantial GPU resources, simplify scenes, remove unnecessary filters, and reduce costly sources. OBS notes that sources can require resources even when they are not visible.
- Match source resolution to the output. Avoid asking OBS to handle media or capture sources at a higher resolution than the stream needs.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the problem continues. In OBS, open Settings > Video and test a lower value. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. This reduces workload but also changes the stream’s output; use it as a test, not a universal ideal.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a possible quick fix for GPU-overload issues, not a certain cure.
After each change, observe the same relevant Stats counters and test long enough to see whether the symptom returns. Avoid changing network bitrate to treat rendering lag unless network drops are also increasing.
Check YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds, and recommends RTMPS. Its recommended bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not pick a bitrate before confirming those settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance has no publication year stated on the page. The following are its listed H.264 and AV1/H.265 values in Mbps:

| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These figures are not a diagnosis or a recommendation for every study stream. Match the row to your actual encoder, output resolution, and frame rate, and make sure your sustained upload capacity can support the chosen bitrate. YouTube says to test before going live with audio and movement similar to the actual stream, then monitor stream health and review its messages. Its guide also explains that YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, though individual viewers can still face local playback constraints.
If only viewers report buffering
If OBS’s network counter is not increasing and OBS is not reporting performance trouble, do not assume the stream itself is skipping. Viewer location, device, and network can affect playback independently. YouTube transcodes live streams into different formats for viewers, but that does not eliminate every local playback limitation.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Ask whether the problem affects all viewers or only particular viewers, devices, or locations.
- Check YouTube stream health for warnings and compare their timing with viewer reports.
- If broad accessibility is important, consider a lower bitrate that remains within YouTube’s recommendations for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
OBS’s viewer-buffering guidance was dated 2021. It treats buffering without OBS-dropped frames as a separate issue from a failing OBS-to-YouTube connection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the video source itself jumps or stops looping
If the media visibly skips in OBS’s preview while network and performance counters remain normal, the source or its playback behavior may be involved. The right fix depends on whether the source is a media file, playlist, or another source type, and on how it is configured to loop or restart. Check the source’s playback and restart settings, then note whether the source reaches its end, changes files, or freezes. If the problem persists, collect the OBS log and the source type and settings; without those details, a specific loop fix would be guesswork.
