For most creators building an ordered real estate tour playlist, OBS is the easier starting point: add the videos through a VLC Video source, leave shuffle off, and enable playlist looping. FFmpeg suits a command-line workflow, but its documented infinite-loop option applies to an input; it is not, by itself, a complete multi-file playlist or recovery system. Either way, the computer, media files, and internet connection still have to keep working for the broadcast to continue.
OBS or FFmpeg: which should you choose?

These are workflow differences, not benchmark results. OBS documents its playlist controls; FFmpeg documents its input-looping options. Neither alone guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.
Set up an ordered looping playlist in OBS
- Install OBS and VLC. VLC must be installed for OBS’s VLC Video source. Match the architectures: OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources documentation (dated 2022-01-11) explains the available media-source controls.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source, then build the list of local tour videos in the order you want them played. Keep shuffle disabled when sequence matters and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS says this option restarts the source when it runs out of media files; shuffle and loop playlist are on and off by default, respectively.
- Configure YouTube ingestion. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream’s RTMPS URL and stream key. In OBS, choose YouTube/RTMPS if that option is available in your setup, or enter the RTMPS server URL and key in the stream configuration. Keep the key private. RTMPS is RTMP carried through an SSL connection; YouTube’s guide specifies port 443. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Test before relying on it. Start a private or unlisted test, or test a scheduled stream, then verify the picture, audio, playlist order, and YouTube stream-health feedback before promoting the broadcast. Choose visibility and scheduling to suit the channel and audience.
- Plan for failures. OBS can keep looping while it is running, but the host must stay powered and connected and the source files must remain accessible. Decide who will respond or what will restart OBS if the application, computer, or network fails.
For individual files, OBS’s Media Source also has a per-file loop control. Use VLC Video when you need multiple files in one ordered playlist.
Use FFmpeg when you want a command-line workflow
- Prepare the input arrangement. Decide how the actual files will be presented to FFmpeg. The documented
-stream_loop -1option loops an input infinitely, but it does not define a complete multi-file playlist or guarantee seamless transitions between files. - Place input options correctly.
-stream_loopis an input option, so put it before the relevant-iinput. FFmpeg documents-reas reading at native frame rate; it can be useful when pacing file input for live output. - Match the output to YouTube. Configure the output container, codecs, frame rate, audio, and destination for the current stream, and use the RTMPS address and stream name/key from YouTube Live Control Room. Do not treat a generic command as production-ready without adapting it to those files and settings.
- Supervise the process. Watch the process and YouTube stream health, and arrange a process supervisor or an operator response if the stream is meant to run unattended. A running FFmpeg process is only one part of the delivery chain.
FFmpeg’s official manual documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping and describes -re as native-frame-rate reading. See the FFmpeg manual. The command options do not remove the need to validate the actual media and output configuration.

Check YouTube stream health and troubleshoot interruptions
YouTube’s LiveStreams API exposes primary and backup ingestion addresses and a health-status field that can report configuration issues. Use the current health feedback in Live Control Room when diagnosing delivery trouble; YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation describes health status and stream configuration.
- The playlist stops at the end: In OBS VLC Video, check that Loop Playlist is enabled. For a single Media Source file, check its separate loop setting.
- The videos play in the wrong order: Review the VLC Video file list and disable shuffle.
- OBS does not offer VLC Video: Confirm VLC is installed and, where relevant, that its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC).
- YouTube reports a configuration issue: Inspect stream-health feedback for issues such as unsupported audio, bitrate mismatch, or frame-rate mismatch, then adjust the encoder output to the current stream requirements.
- The stream disconnects even though looping is enabled: Looping only controls playback after media reaches its end. Check whether the computer is still powered, the network is connected, files are available, and the encoder process is running; then restore or restart the failed part of the chain.
- FFmpeg repeats an input but not a whole tour sequence: Confirm that the input itself represents the intended sequence.
-stream_loop -1loops the specified input; it does not assemble several files into a playlist for you.
Copyright, reused content, and tour footage
Before making property footage public, make sure you have permission to stream every video, music track, voiceover, photograph, and other included material. A playlist that can technically loop is not automatically cleared for broadcast. YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules depend on the content and channel; check the current requirements for your situation rather than assuming that owning or recording a tour clears third-party elements.
