Copy the stream URL and key for your church’s event from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then use them as FFmpeg’s output destination. The URL tells FFmpeg where to connect; the key authorizes the feed. Keep the key private, test the stream before the service, and use the current encoder settings YouTube recommends for your resolution and frame rate.
1. Create or select the YouTube live event
- Confirm the channel is eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification, no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and that the streamer be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then create a stream or select the scheduled service in Live Control Room. YouTube’s labels and layout can change; use the current Live Control Room for the event you intend to broadcast.
2. Copy the stream URL and key
In the event’s Stream tab, copy the server URL and stream key shown in Stream settings. Use the values for that actual event or the reusable custom key you have chosen. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: don’t put it in a public command transcript, screenshot, shared document, or public repository. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance and Manage live stream settings.
YouTube recommends RTMPS. Copy the RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming an ordinary RTMP URL can be substituted. The server URL and key are supplied by YouTube; they are not universal values to copy from another channel or tutorial.
3. Put the values in FFmpeg’s output URL
FFmpeg publishes to an output URL. In the general RTMP pattern, the destination contains the server, application path, and stream name or key. YouTube’s supplied server URL and key need to be combined in the format appropriate to the values shown for your stream. FFmpeg documents the general form with an RTMP destination and FLV output; see its RTMP protocol documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 2500k -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv 'rtmp://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'
This is a schematic example, not a tested command or a universal YouTube preset. Replace INPUT, the server and path components, and the key placeholder with your actual values. If Live Control Room gives you an RTMPS URL, use that URL and confirm your FFmpeg build supports the required RTMPS/TLS connection. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as an RTMP variant using SSL/TLS.
Do not paste a real key into a command you plan to publish or share. If a key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the FFmpeg destination before the next broadcast.

4. Choose settings for the church feed
The example’s bitrate is illustrative only. Choose codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit the camera feed, your desired output, and measured upload capacity. YouTube’s current encoder settings table lists recommendations by codec and resolution; consult the relevant row rather than treating a single bitrate as correct for every service. For ordinary SDR RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, recommends CBR, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current bitrate ranges and details.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to the actual camera feed and the quality you intend to deliver; do not upscale needlessly.
- Video bitrate: Use YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, and ensure the connection has headroom.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where your encoding setup permits it, and do not exceed four seconds under YouTube’s recommendation.
- Audio: Use a supported audio codec and verify the sermon microphone and any music are audible and balanced in the preview.
- Upload capacity: YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. Account for both primary and backup streams if you send both.
5. Test and monitor before the service
- Start FFmpeg early enough to correct connection or encoding problems before the congregation expects the stream.
- Open the event preview in Live Control Room and confirm that video and audio arrive. Test with motion and sound similar to the actual service, not just a static image.
- Check stream health and available upload bandwidth; leave the recommended headroom and account for any backup stream.
- Confirm the public watch page is accessible to the intended audience and that the selected event is the one receiving the feed.
For a church service, also confirm that the channel has permission to broadcast any music, recordings, or other copyrighted material in the service. A successful encoder connection does not itself establish that the content is cleared under YouTube’s rules.

6. End the broadcast and protect the archive
When the service is over, stop the FFmpeg encoder and end the event in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the selected event is live or scheduled, and that FFmpeg is using the matching server URL and key. Re-copy both from that event’s Stream settings if uncertain.
- Authentication or key error: Verify that the key was not mistyped or paired with another event’s destination. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in FFmpeg.
- RTMPS SSL error: Confirm the URL was copied as RTMPS from Live Control Room. YouTube advises trying port 443 if an SSL error occurs; if the connection still fails, check that the FFmpeg build has suitable RTMPS/TLS support.
- Unstable stream or dropped frames: Check measured upload bandwidth against the chosen bitrate, reduce the output bitrate or resolution if necessary, and preserve the recommended 20% headroom. Include primary and backup streams in the bandwidth calculation.
- Picture works but sermon audio is missing or poor: Check the input audio device and FFmpeg audio settings, then verify the result in Live Control Room before the service begins.
- Preview appears late or the wrong event is receiving video: Confirm the event selected in Live Control Room matches the stream URL and key configured in FFmpeg; allow time for the preview to populate.
Or let it run in the cloud
