If OBS shows “Encoding overloaded!” during a 24/7 YouTube stream, first reduce OBS’s local rendering or encoding workload: lower the output resolution, try 30 fps if 60 fps is not sustainable, free GPU resources, and simplify scenes. Switch to a compatible hardware encoder only if the CPU is the bottleneck. Check YouTube’s stream health and your upload connection separately; a delivery problem is not, by itself, proof of encoder overload.
What “Encoding overloaded!” means
OBS must render and composite scenes as well as encode the outgoing video. If it cannot keep up, a GPU bottleneck or another system constraint can trigger the warning—even when encoding is assigned to the CPU. The message identifies a local performance problem, but does not identify the exact component or cause. The OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, dated June 12, 2021, recommends leaving resources available to OBS and reducing the workload.
Keep OBS performance separate from YouTube delivery diagnostics. YouTube recommends matching stream settings to the available connection and monitoring stream health. A stream can have one problem or both, so diagnose each on its own.
Change settings and workload in this order
-
Lower the output resolution
In OBS, open Settings > Video and reduce the Output (Scaled) Resolution. This lowers the work required to render and encode the stream, at the cost of image detail. If possible, leave Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged: OBS generally advises against lowering the canvas because it can complicate capture setup and asset layout. Treat a canvas change as a last resort for severe resource constraints.

-
Reduce the frame rate if the current rate will not hold
If you are streaming at 60 fps and OBS cannot keep up, try 30 fps. Lower frame rates reduce rendering and encoding work, but motion looks less smooth. Choose the highest output quality your system can sustain rather than assuming one setting suits every machine.
-
Match the encoder to the bottleneck
If x264 software encoding is saturating the CPU, a compatible hardware encoder may shift encoding work to a specialized video-encoding component. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance, but results depend on the encoder and hardware. Earlier hardware-encoder generations can produce lower quality than x264’s default veryfast preset at the same bitrate.

Hardware encoding does not eliminate OBS’s GPU scene-rendering work. If the GPU is already overloaded, switching to a GPU hardware encoder may not solve the problem. OBS documents NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox, subject to hardware and operating-system compatibility; see its Hardware Encoding guide, dated January 11, 2022. Do not buy a graphics card before identifying which resource is saturated.
-
Free GPU capacity
- Close other programs using substantial GPU resources.
- If a game is running alongside OBS, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync; reduce graphics settings if needed.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS says this can help in some GPU-overload cases.
-
Simplify scenes and sources that stay active
Remove unused or resource-intensive sources and filters, and avoid oversized source assets when smaller dimensions will do. Browser sources can be demanding. OBS notes that a source may still consume resources when it is not visible, so hiding an item is not necessarily the same as removing its workload.

Check YouTube ingest settings and upload capacity separately
Once OBS is keeping up locally, verify that the outgoing stream matches YouTube’s ingest guidance and your connection. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; supports frame rates up to 60 fps; recommends CBR; and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page gives codec-specific guidance, so do not reuse an H.264 bitrate for AV1 or H.265.
The H.264 recommendations below are YouTube guidance, not a measurement of your internet connection. The Help page shows no publication date; these figures were present when accessed October 3, 2026.

Run a speed test, then test the stream with representative audio and motion before relying on it. Monitor YouTube stream health during the broadcast. A bitrate that exceeds dependable upload capacity can cause delivery trouble even if OBS is not overloaded; lowering bitrate may help delivery but does not directly diagnose a local rendering or encoding bottleneck.

YouTube warns that a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its Archive live streams guidance recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; see Turn on DVR on live streams. If a complete replay or rewind matters, do not rely on a single uninterrupted 24/7 stream to provide it; plan a local archive and consider dividing the broadcast into shorter sessions.

During operation, confirm that the local recording file is growing and keep checking outgoing audio and video quality. YouTube’s YouTube live streaming tips — Computer recommends verifying the archive and continuously monitoring quality. Build those checks into the run procedure rather than relying only on the public stream page.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports “Encoding overloaded!” | Local rendering or encoding workload; the warning alone does not specify which resource is constrained. | Reduce output resolution or frame rate, free GPU resources, simplify scenes, then assess whether the CPU is limiting x264. |
| OBS keeps up, but YouTube reports poor stream health | Ingest configuration or network delivery. | Check codec, CBR, keyframe interval, codec-appropriate bitrate, and reliable upload capacity; test and monitor the stream. |
| Switching to a hardware encoder does not clear the warning | The GPU may be constrained by scene rendering, or the bottleneck may be elsewhere. | Reduce output workload and GPU-heavy applications; do not assume hardware encoding removes rendering work. |
| The stream is live, but the replay is missing or rewind is incomplete | YouTube’s long-stream archive and DVR limits. | Keep a verified local recording; consider shorter broadcast sessions if on-platform replay or rewind is important. |
| Local recording exists but may have stopped growing | Archive continuity is unverified. | Check the recording file during the event and monitor audio and video continuously. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded video rather than a live camera or gameplay capture, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube only. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
