For a YouTube stream, set OBS to Stereo and use 44.1 kHz audio at 128 Kbps. For video, choose a resolution, frame rate, encoder and bitrate that YouTube supports and your connection can sustain; there is no single safe bitrate for every 24/7 stream. These settings can prepare a stream, but they cannot guarantee uninterrupted operation: your computer, encoder, scene, connection and destination platform all matter.
Set up stereo audio in OBS
- Open Settings → Audio and set Channels to Stereo.
- Select the device or source that carries the forest recording. If the Audio Mixer meters do not move during playback—or show activity from the wrong device—choose the intended device manually in OBS.
- Play the ambience and watch its Audio Mixer meter. Confirm that the intended source produces a signal before going live; a stereo setting alone does not establish that the right audio is being captured.
For YouTube specifically, its current encoder guidance recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps, using AAC or MP3 audio encoding. Those are YouTube recommendations, not settings to assume for every streaming service. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Keep the output stereo for this use case. OBS notes that mismatched input and output channel layouts can lead to remapping or channel removal; multichannel output is not needed for a stereo ambience stream. See the OBS surround sound guide.
Choose video settings for the destination and connection
For YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. It recommends RTMPS for the connection to YouTube. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate, so consult the current table for your chosen output rather than applying one generic bitrate to every stream.

In OBS, select the video encoder and output settings that match the YouTube recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Then check that your sustained upload connection can support the selected bitrate. YouTube’s settings and bitrate table are at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
For another destination
Do not assume YouTube’s audio, codec, keyframe, bitrate or ingest recommendations apply elsewhere. Check the chosen service’s current live encoder guidance and use its requirements alongside OBS’s advice to account for both connection speed and service limits. The destination is not specified here, so no platform-wide bitrate or continuous-broadcast rule can be stated.

Reduce connection problems during a long stream
OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests trying a different server and lowering the video bitrate. When diagnosing a connection issue, OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point—not a universal formula or guarantee. Leave room for normal variation in your connection rather than treating a speed-test result as proof that a bitrate will hold continuously. See the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide.
Prepare OBS for a 24/7 session
- In OBS’s Settings → Advanced, review Automatically Reconnect and enable automatic reconnect for interruptions.
- Before the long session, test the actual forest ambience source, stereo playback, video output and destination’s stream preview for several minutes. Confirm that the service receives both sound and picture.
- Once live, monitor stream health and connection behavior. A successful short test is useful, but it cannot prove the system will remain stable indefinitely.
OBS recommends testing before a real stream, and its system requirements page cautions that a compatible computer does not guarantee it can stream or record with OBS. Capability varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Your destination may also set its own rules for continuous live broadcasts and archives; verify those policies in that service’s current documentation before planning an always-on stream. Troubleshoot common symptoms
