There is no OBS setting that can guarantee a nonstop YouTube stream on BSNL broadband. Start with the upload speed that remains stable at the streaming location—not the plan’s advertised download speed—then set the total stream bitrate to no more than about 80% of that stable upload. Use CBR, H.264 and a two-second keyframe interval, test the complete stream under realistic conditions, and monitor OBS and YouTube while live.
Choose a bitrate your BSNL connection can sustain
YouTube says the total stream bitrate should stay below available upload bandwidth, with 20% left as headroom. That margin helps accommodate variation and other traffic; it cannot guarantee a stable route to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when troubleshooting, but that is a rule of thumb, not a BSNL-specific guarantee. For a conservative starting decision, use the lower of those approaches if your connection varies.
Measure the connection at the streaming setup
- Connect the streaming computer to the router or ONT with Ethernet if practical. This removes Wi-Fi as one possible source of variation, but does not increase the upstream capacity BSNL provides.
- Run multiple upload tests at the place and times you expect to stream. Consider other household traffic, and base the setting on the upload speed that is consistently available to the stream rather than the highest result.
- Multiply that stable upload figure by 0.8 to apply YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation. Keep the total bitrate—video plus audio—at or below the resulting budget. If upload varies, start lower and test again.
For example, if representative repeated tests show 5 Mbps of stable upload available to the stream, an approximately 4 Mbps total bitrate follows the 20% headroom rule. This is arithmetic, not a claim about BSNL speeds, and it does not guarantee the connection to YouTube will remain stable.
Match resolution and frame rate to the measured budget
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations below are platform ranges, not required BSNL speeds. They are video bitrates; reserve room within the total upload budget for audio and any variation.

A 720p profile is a sensible fallback to test, not an automatic fit for every BSNL line. If the stable upload budget cannot accommodate the lower end of a recommendation plus audio and headroom, reduce the output or resolve the connection limitation rather than relying on a peak speed-test result.
Set the OBS streaming profile
In OBS, select Settings > Output. If you need separate streaming controls, change Output Mode to Advanced and open the Streaming tab. Labels can vary slightly by OBS version.

- Rate Control: CBR.
- Video encoder: H.264 for the broadly compatible SDR profile covered here. The right encoder also depends on the computer and available hardware; do not buy or switch hardware without diagnosing an actual encoding bottleneck.
- Bitrate: Set video bitrate within the upload budget determined above, leaving space for audio. Lower it if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC is suitable; YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo.
Under Settings > Video, use progressive output at the frame rate you intend to stream. For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 color and 8-bit. Select the resolution and frame rate only after checking that their bitrate fits your stable upload budget. Configure OBS with the stream key provided in YouTube Live Control Room; treat the key as private and do not share or publish it.
Test before relying on the stream
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a private or unlisted test stream and copy its stream key into OBS.
- Run the actual scene for long enough to exercise the expected motion, audio, and network conditions. A speed test alone cannot establish that a long live stream will remain stable.
- Confirm that YouTube detects the incoming stream and check its stream-health indicators. In OBS, watch the dropped-frame counter and Statistics window.
- If the test is stable, use the same scene and network setup for the public stream. Continue watching stream health and OBS statistics while live.
YouTube transcodes live streams into playback options, but that does not repair an unstable feed arriving from OBS.

Fix dropped frames, buffering, or interruptions
OBS dropped-frame counter is rising
OBS explains that dropped frames generally mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the chosen bitrate. Lower the video bitrate first, then repeat a representative test. If the selected ingest connection still appears unstable, try another available YouTube ingest server.
Check software and network variables
- Temporarily diagnose whether a VPN, firewall or security program, or bundled network software is interfering with OBS. Restore protections after diagnosis; if appropriate, add an OBS application exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Use Ethernet to rule out Wi-Fi variability where possible. It will not fix insufficient BSNL upload capacity or an upstream provider outage.
- OBS offers Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion under Settings > Advanced > Network. It can lower bitrate instead of dropping frames, but reduces quality and does not fix an unstable underlying connection. Treat it as a fallback, not a substitute for adequate stable upload.
Distinguish network drops from encoding trouble
Check OBS Statistics and system load. Network-related dropped frames point to the connection to the ingest server; rendering or encoding lag points to a different problem. Diagnose which counter is affected before changing encoder settings or considering hardware.

Viewers report buffering but OBS shows no dropped frames
Buffering can occur on the viewer’s side even when OBS reports no dropped frames. A lower bitrate may improve compatibility for viewers with slower connections, but assess stream health and your own test results before changing settings.

BSNL’s Wi-Fi terms say uninterrupted service is not warranted and list technical, network, power, or maintenance issues among possible causes of interruption. Those are Wi-Fi service terms, not a universal statement about every Bharat Fiber plan. [BSNL Wi-Fi terms]
Reduce local failure risks—but know their limits
- Ethernet: A wired connection can remove local Wi-Fi as a variable. It cannot raise the upstream capacity supplied by BSNL.
- UPS: If local power interruptions are the concern, a UPS for the router or ONT—and, if needed, the streaming computer—may keep that equipment powered. Choose capacity and runtime for the attached equipment. A UPS cannot prevent provider-side network outages or promise an uninterrupted stream.
