For a documented graphical setup on a Windows PC, OBS Studio is the better-supported starting point. Its official guides cover stream keys, encoder settings, reconnect options, testing, and Windows network troubleshooting. That does not prove OBS is more reliable than FFmpeg: the available official-source evidence does not support a complete head-to-head comparison of FFmpeg’s Windows setup or recovery behavior.
Either way, one consumer PC cannot be treated as a guaranteed 24/7 service. Plan for power, Windows, hardware, network, and platform failures—and do not rely on YouTube to archive a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.

If you already know FFmpeg and have a tested Windows workflow, this comparison does not establish that you should switch. If you need an officially documented graphical path and controls you can inspect before leaving a stream unattended, OBS is the more supportable choice on the evidence available.
What you need before streaming from Windows
Check the PC, then test the actual workload
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as basic requirements. Meeting them does not mean a PC can encode your chosen stream settings reliably. OBS says load depends on encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; its Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting point. For a 24/7 channel, a static or lightly animated scene may place a different load on a system than a game capture with frequent motion and overlays. This is a reason to test your real program, not a guarantee that a particular scene will be easy to encode. OBS also notes that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps. OBS streaming guide
Prepare a stable network and a private stream key
Use Ethernet if your Wi-Fi is unstable. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming; it improves the network path but cannot prevent an ISP outage, router failure, or other interruption. Set YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, with AAC or MP3 audio and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its guidance also calls for square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings page before configuring a stream because platform guidance can change.
Use bitrate recommendations as a starting point, not an upload guarantee
YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates include these values. They are platform recommendations, not a promise that your internet connection can sustain them continuously.

For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Choose a video bitrate and output your stable upstream connection can handle, then test for sustained stream health rather than assuming a speed-test result is enough. YouTube encoder settings
Set up OBS and confirm the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key for encoder setup. For a scheduled broadcast, leave the Live Control Room open so you can check the preview before going live. YouTube encoder setup
- In OBS, configure the stream service or server and key. OBS’s streaming guide documents selecting an included service or a custom server and entering the stream key. Keep the key confidential. OBS streaming guide
- Set the output and encoder. Choose a resolution and frame rate your PC can encode and your upload can sustain. Apply YouTube’s codec, CBR, bitrate, audio, and keyframe guidance above; use RTMPS when configuring the YouTube ingest URL.
- Enable recovery and run a real test. OBS documents automatic reconnect under Advanced settings. Test your scenes, audio, smoothness, and stream health before relying on the setup unattended. Reconnect can help with some dropped connections; it does not resolve every failure. OBS streaming guide

Keep a 24/7 stream running—and plan for failure
Understand what OBS reconnect can and cannot do
OBS’s automatic reconnect is useful for some disconnections, but no reconnect setting makes a Windows PC a guaranteed always-on service. It cannot prevent a power cut, forced restart, hardware fault, encoder crash, sustained network outage, or YouTube-side problem. Reduce dropped frames by matching bitrate to the connection
OBS explains that dropped frames can mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Its troubleshooting page suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for reducing bitrate. Treat that as OBS troubleshooting guidance—not a YouTube bitrate rule—and leave headroom for ordinary variation. OBS also documents Windows-only network optimization and TCP pacing options, and recommends checking security software, VPNs, network utilities, and drivers. - If you use unstable Wi-Fi, test on Ethernet.
- If dropped frames persist, lower the bitrate and test again; check cables, network cards, modem, and router as well as software and drivers.
- If you use dynamic bitrate, monitor the resulting picture quality instead of assuming the stream is unchanged.
Use a backup encoder only if you can test the handoff
YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming the player rolls over to the backup. Do not rely on YouTube to archive a 24-hour broadcast
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. For a continuous 24/7 channel, the live broadcast and a complete recording are separate goals. If retaining the program matters, record locally and verify the recording. YouTube archive live streams

Copyright and reused-content checks for a gaming channel
Before leaving a stream unattended, confirm you have the rights to the game footage, music, and other material in the program. A game’s soundtrack or third-party music can create copyright issues even when the gameplay is yours. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from whether an encoder successfully sends video; encoder settings do not grant permission to broadcast content. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and YouTube channel monetization policies for the rules that apply to your channel and content.
