Choose OBS Studio if you need a visual production workspace for scenes, sources, and interactive adjustments; choose FFmpeg if your stream is a repeatable media pipeline you can describe and supervise with commands. Neither has an established 24/7 reliability advantage. For either, test the actual VPS, outbound network, media, and restart plan before relying on it for an unattended broadcast.

These are workflow recommendations, not a measured reliability ranking. No comparative evidence establishes that either application is inherently more reliable for continuous streaming.
Use YouTube’s ingest settings as your starting point
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, constant bitrate (CBR), and keyframes every two seconds, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Supported RTMP/RTMPS video codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; supported audio codecs are AAC and MP3. YouTube recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps in its advanced settings. The figures below are YouTube-published recommended encoder bitrates. The current guidance page does not display a publication year. They are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of sustained bandwidth from an India-region VPS.

Choose a quality the available connection can sustain. A speed-test peak is not evidence of stable capacity around the clock; allow headroom and test from the actual VPS over an extended period.
Configure and validate the stream before leaving it unattended
- Set up the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and use its stream key in your encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in a public command, screenshot, or log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Match the encoder to the broadcast. Select RTMPS where available, a supported video and audio codec, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate according to YouTube’s recommendations and the VPS’s measured capacity.
- Test representative content. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test using audio and motion similar to the intended stream. Check that the picture, sound, and chosen encoder settings appear correctly in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Watch both ends of the connection. Before and during the broadcast, monitor YouTube stream health and its messages. Separately monitor the server process, outbound connection, and any media input. A healthy encoder process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Design recovery deliberately. Decide how you will detect and handle a process exit, network interruption, missing or unreadable input file, and VPS reboot. Configure process supervision and alerts appropriate to the operating system and hosting plan, then test recovery rather than assuming it works.
Plan an Indian VPS around the actual workload
An India-region VPS label does not establish a particular sustained upload rate, route quality to YouTube ingest, traffic allowance, or uptime. No authoritative provider comparison or generic VPS sizing is established here. Check the specific current plan against the stream you intend to run.

- Region and route: confirm the server location and test sustained uploads from the instance to YouTube’s ingest. Do not assume geography alone means a reliable route.
- Outbound data: check whether egress is included, capped, or billed separately. Estimate monthly transfer from the selected bitrate, then allow for audio and protocol overhead and the actual hours streamed.
- Compute: measure the real encoding, decoding, and filter workload. Confirm whether hardware encoding is exposed to the VPS rather than assuming it is available.
- Storage: if recording locally, verify capacity and write performance for the intended recording duration, in addition to the streaming workload.
- Operations and support: check reboot behavior, process supervision options, logs, monitoring, support response, and service limits before depending on the instance.
- Audience delivery: select the VPS for stable encoder-to-YouTube ingest operation. YouTube handles downstream transcoding and delivery; the VPS is not the server that directly serves every viewer.
FFmpeg stream copy versus re-encoding
If an existing file already uses compatible codecs and settings, FFmpeg can sometimes send its encoded streams without re-encoding. That can reduce processing demand, but it does not let you filter the media, and compatibility depends on the input and output combination. If you need resizing, overlays, audio changes, or another filter, stream copy is not the right mode for those streams. Consult the FFmpeg manual for the input, output, filtering, and stream-copy options you plan to use; validate the resulting stream in YouTube Live Control Room before a long run.
Protect the recording separately from the live broadcast
Do not treat a very long live stream as a guaranteed YouTube archive. YouTube’s archive guidance warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived. If a durable copy matters, arrange an independent recording and verify the resulting file. Technical teams can also use the YouTube Live Streaming API to work with live-stream resources and status information; API integration is optional, not a prerequisite for basic encoder setup.

Keep a continuous stream within YouTube’s content rules
Using a game, music track, or other recording as the source does not itself establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the content and any audio, and follow YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and copyright rules. A stream remaining technically online does not prevent a rights claim or other platform action. Review YouTube’s current policies for the specific content before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
