Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If OBS is stuck on “Starting” in YouTube, first check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and OBS’s own status indicators: a missing preview or encoder-start error points to the feed or stream-key setup; dropped frames point to the network; “encoding overloaded” points to your computer’s rendering or encoding load. Refreshing the stream key is the right first step for YouTube’s specific third-party encoder-start error, but it will not fix every cause.
Identify which part of the stream is failing
While OBS is attempting to stream, open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Check whether YouTube shows a preview and read the current stream-health message. At the same time, look at OBS’s status indicators and log. The location and wording of the warning help distinguish a feed or authentication problem from an unstable connection or local performance issue.
| What you see | What it suggests | First check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports an error starting the encoder, or no usable preview appears | YouTube may not be receiving an acceptable feed; the stream key or connection details may need attention. | Follow YouTube’s encoder-start guidance and verify the stream configuration in OBS. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | The connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Test the connection path and bitrate. |
| OBS reports “encoding overloaded” | The computer may not have enough available GPU or encoding capacity for the current scene and output settings. | Reduce local rendering or encoding load. |
These symptoms can overlap, so use the current messages rather than assuming every “Starting” stall has the same cause.
Fix a YouTube encoder-start error
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for third-party encoders recommends getting a new stream key from the Live Control Room and updating the encoder when YouTube reports an error starting the encoder.

- Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and locate its stream key.
- Copy the current key and enter it in OBS’s stream settings for the intended YouTube stream.
- Start the stream again and check the Live Control Room for a preview and updated stream-health messages.
A stream key is a credential. Keep it private and do not paste it into public chat, screenshots, or support posts. If you believe someone else has obtained it, a channel owner or manager can reset it; then update OBS with the replacement key. YouTube’s key guidance is at Manage your live stream settings.
If you sign into YouTube from third-party software without entering a stream key and the connection fails, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support; it may need an update to work with YouTube Live. Do not reset a key as a catch-all fix for dropped frames or an overloaded encoder.

Check OBS’s YouTube service, key, and server details
In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Confirm that the selected service or account, stream key, and server or stream URL correspond to the stream you intend to start. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains where to get the key and recommends monitoring stream health and messages in the Live Control Room: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Treat protocol changes as a targeted check when the error points to SSL, a connection timeout, or an RTMPS configuration issue—not as a universal cure for a stream stuck on “Starting.” For those errors, verify that OBS is using the actual RTMPS server URL, that the URL and port are correct (YouTube documents port 443 as a possible configuration), and that the encoder supports RTMPS. See YouTube’s RTMPS guide.

Fix dropped frames by testing the connection
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable to the remote streaming server or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Its official troubleshooting guide says dropped frames are very unlikely to be caused by OBS itself. Work through the connection checks below, changing one factor at a time where practical.
- Try another server. If OBS offers a different YouTube ingest server, test it and compare the stream-health result.
- Lower the video bitrate. A connection may fail to sustain the current rate even if a speed test briefly reports a higher upload speed.
- Try wired Ethernet. Wi-Fi instability can interrupt an otherwise adequate connection. If possible, test with a known-good cable you already have before buying equipment.
- Check network software. Temporarily investigate whether firewall or antivirus rules, a VPN, or bundled network-prioritization or “optimization” software is interfering with the connection.
- Check drivers and network hardware. OBS lists network drivers and possible modem, router, or other hardware faults among factors to investigate. Restarting the modem and router is a reasonable diagnostic step.
- Isolate the route. OBS suggests testing another streaming service to help determine whether the issue is specific to a service. This is a diagnostic test, not a substitute for confirming YouTube’s settings.
OBS’s connection guide gives a practical starting point: set bitrate to 75% of total upload speed. This is a rule of thumb for troubleshooting—not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of stable sustained upload. Dynamic bitrate can lower quality when congestion occurs, but OBS describes it as a workaround rather than a root-cause fix. If instability persists after these checks, OBS advises contacting your ISP because routing congestion or ISP-side changes may be involved. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting (dated 2024-09-30).

Fix “encoding overloaded” by reducing local load
“Encoding overloaded” is a local performance warning, not evidence that your stream key is wrong. OBS scene composition and rendering use GPU resources. Try these changes if OBS reports encoding overload:
- On Windows, test running OBS as administrator.
- Close programs you know are using substantial GPU resources.
- If streaming a game, reduce its graphics settings or frame rate to free capacity.
- Reduce OBS output frame rate—for example, test 30 fps instead of 60 fps if needed.
- Reduce output resolution.
- Simplify complex scenes, and reduce resource-intensive browser sources or filters.
Change a setting, then test again and check whether the warning clears. These steps address rendering and encoding load; they will not fix an invalid key or an unreachable ingest server. OBS’s encoding guidance is dated 2021-06-12, and labels or Windows behavior may vary by OBS version: OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

Compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s official encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingest, up to 60 fps. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds. The Live Control Room generally detects resolution and frame rate automatically unless a custom key uses manual settings. Check YouTube’s live page for current guidance because specifications can change.
For H.264, YouTube publishes the following minimum and recommended bitrate examples. These are platform guidance, not a measurement of what your own upload connection can sustain:
| Output | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Choose a bitrate that fits both YouTube’s settings and the stable upload capacity available to your stream. If the connection cannot sustain a target, reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate rather than relying on a brief speed-test peak. YouTube recommends testing before a live event with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the test.
Run a controlled test and know when to escalate
- Start a test stream with representative audio and video movement.
- Watch for a YouTube preview and note the exact stream-health message.
- Check whether OBS reports dropped frames, encoding overload, or neither.
- Record the selected protocol and server, and note whether the OBS log points to authentication, timeout, or performance trouble.
- Change the setting that matches the symptom, then repeat the test so you can tell whether it helped.
If you have persistent connection instability after OBS’s suggested checks, contact your ISP and share the times and connection symptoms. Keep stream keys and other credentials out of any logs or screenshots you share publicly.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, rather than troubleshoot a live OBS production, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
