Short answer: Choose OBS if you want a graphical production interface and scene-based control; choose FFmpeg if your stream can be defined as a repeatable command or script and you can manage its operations. Neither encoder alone makes a channel reliable around the clock. For pre-recorded YouTube video that should keep running without a computer at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative.

OBS vs FFmpeg: which fits your 24/7 stream?

Need Better fit Why
Graphical production controls and operator-managed scenes OBS A GUI and scene-oriented workflow suit production that a person manages interactively.
Repeatable inputs, stream mapping, and outputs FFmpeg Its command-line pipeline can specify multiple inputs and outputs and manually select streams with -map.
Move encoding work off the CPU Either, if configured for supported hardware encoding OBS documents GPU hardware encoding as a way to shift work from the CPU. FFmpeg can also use hardware encoders, depending on its build, platform, and configuration; confirm what your setup supports.
Run unattended and recover from failures Neither by itself Continuous operation needs process monitoring, restart behavior, and a plan for input, network, power, and YouTube ingest failures.

This is a workflow choice, not a measured reliability or quality verdict. There is no basis here for claiming one encoder produces higher-quality 4K60 video or stays live longer. Test your actual source, codec, resolution, frame rate, and machine before committing to a setup.

Set the 4K60 YouTube output correctly

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its figures distinguish codecs, so do not apply the H.264 recommendation to every codec.

Setting YouTube guidance for 2160p at 60 fps
AV1 bitrate 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum
H.265 (HEVC) bitrate 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum
H.264 bitrate 35 Mbps recommended
Rate control CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds
Frame rate Up to 60 fps

The same guidance specifies AAC or MP3 audio, square pixels, progressive scan, and two B-frames. For SDR it lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. It names HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in this context. These ingest settings can change; check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before configuring a production stream.

Configure OBS for a continuous stream

  1. Prepare the source and scene. Add the video or other source you intend to broadcast, arrange it in a scene, and verify its audio and framing. A 4K60 output cannot restore detail or smoothness missing from a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate source.
  2. Connect YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the applicable service entry, and enter the key. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
  3. Set video output. In Settings > Video, set the output resolution to 3840 × 2160 and frame rate to 60 fps if the source and system can sustain them. Use progressive output and square pixels.
  4. Set encoder and rate control. In Settings > Output, choose an encoder supported by your OBS build and hardware. Use CBR and the bitrate YouTube recommends for the chosen codec at 2160p60: 35 Mbps recommended for H.264, or 10–40 Mbps for AV1 and HEVC. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Confirm codec options, B-frames, and audio format against YouTube’s current guidance and the controls exposed by your encoder.
  5. Test before leaving it unattended. Start a private or unlisted test stream and inspect YouTube Live Control Room for ingest warnings, dropped frames, and audio/video behavior. Watch system load and network stability under the real 4K60 workload; a setting being selectable does not prove the computer can sustain it.
  6. Plan process and power recovery. A saved OBS profile does not itself restart OBS after a crash or restore a stream after an internet or power interruption. Arrange appropriate monitoring and restart handling, and test recovery. Keep the computer, network equipment, and source powered for as long as the stream must remain live.

Build a repeatable FFmpeg stream

FFmpeg suits a pipeline that can be described as inputs, stream selection, encoding choices, and an output. Its flexibility also means you must explicitly manage those choices. The exact encoder names and options depend on the FFmpeg build, operating system, and available hardware, so check ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders on the machine you will use.

  1. Identify the input. Select the file, capture device, or other source and confirm its video and audio streams. FFmpeg supports multiple inputs and outputs; use -map to select the intended video and audio streams rather than relying on an accidental default.
  2. Choose an available encoder. Select a software or supported hardware encoder for the chosen YouTube codec. Confirm the build supports it and that the machine can encode the intended resolution and frame rate in real time.
  3. Apply YouTube’s output requirements. Configure 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps where the source and system support it, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the codec-specific bitrate guidance above. Include compatible audio and verify pixel format, scan, B-frames, and other output details for the selected codec.
  4. Publish to the correct ingest endpoint. Use YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest details and the stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key out of logs, scripts shared with others, and public repositories. Check YouTube’s current ingest guidance rather than assuming an endpoint or key remains valid.
  5. Run it in the background safely. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends -nostdin, or redirecting standard input, to avoid a background process suspending while checking console input. This addresses one hazard only; it does not add health checks, logging, alerts, automatic restart, or failover.
  6. Supervise the complete chain. Add process monitoring and a tested restart policy, retain useful logs, and decide how you will detect a stalled input, encoder overload, network loss, or rejected ingest. Verify the published stream in YouTube Live Control Room and test recovery deliberately.

Because FFmpeg options vary by build and input type, there is no single safe command that fits every source and machine. Check the documentation for your installed version and test the exact command under the workload you intend to run.

RTMPS or HLS?

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over a secure connection. FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over SSL. For the typical encoder workflow in this comparison, start with YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

HLS ingestion is a separate option, not a universal replacement. Google’s HLS ingestion guide specifies an M2TS container, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs, and up to 60 fps; it also describes HDR support using HEVC. Use that path only when your encoder and delivery requirements fit its specific requirements.

Why an encoder setting is not a 24/7 plan

A stream stays live only while every necessary part of the chain works: the source remains available, the machine can encode in real time, the network path holds, YouTube accepts the ingest, and power remains on. OBS or FFmpeg settings address only parts of that chain. A 24/7 setup needs monitoring, a way to detect interruption, and a recovery plan; the available documentation does not establish either program as a complete supervision or failover system.

  • Source: Confirm the input does not end, disappear, or lose audio unexpectedly.
  • Encoding capacity: Test sustained 4K60 operation rather than relying on a brief preview.
  • Network and ingest: Watch for dropped frames, connection loss, or YouTube ingest errors.
  • Process recovery: Decide how a crashed or stuck encoder is detected and restarted.
  • Power: Account for the streaming computer and network equipment, not just the encoder application.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 stream failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube reports an ingest or stream configuration issue Codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, protocol, or stream key Compare the actual output and selected ingest path with YouTube’s current encoder guidance; verify the key in Live Control Room.
Video stutters or frames are dropped Encoding capacity or network stability Check encoder load and network conditions during sustained output. Test a lower workload if the system cannot maintain 4K60; do not assume hardware encoding is available or correctly configured.
FFmpeg stops or suspends in the background Process input handling or lifecycle management Use -nostdin or redirect standard input as FFmpeg’s FAQ advises, then separately implement monitoring and restart behavior.
Stream stops after a source ends or becomes unavailable Input continuity Verify the source remains available and define what the process should do when input ends or fails.
OBS or FFmpeg does not resume after a crash, network loss, or power cut Recovery plan Configure and test process restart and alerting outside the encoder; check the computer, router, and power path as well.
