Choose OBS if you want to build and adjust a lofi stream visually with scenes, overlays, or source changes. Choose FFmpeg if your stream is a fixed, repeatable audio-and-video feed and you are comfortable managing a command-line process. Neither encoder is proven to be more reliable for 24/7 use: uptime depends on the whole setup, including the source, computer, network, monitoring, and recovery plan.

These are workflow distinctions, not benchmark results. No comparative 24/7 uptime or resource-use result is established for either encoder. YouTube’s ingestion requirements apply whichever one you choose. YouTube’s encoder settings and the OBS service configuration are the references to check before setup.
Choose an encoder for the way you produce the stream
Use OBS for a visual, adjustable broadcast
OBS is the more natural fit if your lofi radio layout includes a title card, animated visual, multiple scenes, or sources you may need to change while live. You can inspect the running production through its interface. That helps with hands-on operation, but it does not remove the need to test long runs, monitor the broadcast when unattended, or plan what happens if the machine or connection fails.

Use FFmpeg for a fixed, scripted feed
FFmpeg can suit a stable pipeline that takes a known media input and sends it to YouTube without a scene-based production workflow. It requires comfort with command-line configuration and deliberate handling of input failures, process restarts, and monitoring. The correct loop and reconnect options depend on the FFmpeg build and media source; verify those details for your actual setup rather than relying on a generic command.
What neither choice guarantees
Choosing an encoder is not a complete 24/7 reliability plan. Test the complete source-to-YouTube path, including the computer, outgoing bandwidth, media playback, encoder behavior, and recovery after interruptions. A stream that starts once has not yet demonstrated that it can run unattended.

Set up YouTube ingestion securely
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Review the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide.
- Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Use YouTube’s encoder workflow to obtain the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Labels and service details can change, so confirm them in the current interface.
- Prefer RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. OBS’s maintained service configuration lists YouTube RTMPS endpoints as well as legacy RTMP entries. Confirm the current endpoint in OBS and YouTube Live Control Room before connecting.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not put it in a public command, screenshot, log, or article. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- Match YouTube’s current encoder settings. Use the current official settings page for the exact resolution-and-frame-rate bitrate recommendation; do not reuse one bitrate for every output. The principal published requirements and recommendations are summarized below.

YouTube transcodes incoming streams for viewers on different devices and network conditions. Its recommendations can change, so use the current encoder settings page for the precise bitrate before going live.
When HLS is relevant
YouTube also supports HLS ingestion for certain use cases. It uses segmented video and has higher latency than RTMP; the workflow has requirements including TS segments, a rolling playlist, HTTPS POST/PUT, and segment durations between one and four seconds. An ordinary lofi stream generally does not need HLS unless its codec or workflow requires it. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Make a 24/7 stream operationally resilient
Preflight the source, connection, and encoder
- Confirm the full media source plays through the encoder with the expected image and audio before starting the public broadcast.
- Measure available outbound bandwidth under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; do not allocate the full connection capacity to the stream.
- Test the selected encoder settings and confirm the stream is visible in YouTube Live Control Room.
- For FFmpeg, test how the process behaves if the input ends or becomes unavailable, and decide how a supervisor or operator will detect and restart it. For OBS, test the source and scene behavior and decide how you will detect a frozen or disconnected stream.
- Check audio and video monitoring, not just whether the encoder reports that it is connected.
Plan monitoring and recovery
Decide who or what will notice a dropped connection, silent audio, frozen video, or failed input, and what action follows. Test recovery deliberately: a service should not be considered ready for unattended operation until you have observed what happens after a realistic interruption. YouTube advises testing the encoder and monitoring stream quality; its guidance is at YouTube Help.
Keep an archive if the full broadcast matters
YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed complete replay. If a full archive matters, record locally and check that the recording works and that the storage device has enough capacity. Read YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Clear music rights before going live
A lofi label or “radio” format does not make music safe to stream. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it detects copyrighted material, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even if you have a license, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the stream to avoid interruption. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams.
YouTube’s livestream terms say creators must hold the rights necessary to use their live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. A subscription or permission to listen to music does not, by itself, establish permission to broadcast it. Confirm that your license covers the intended YouTube live use, territory, and duration. Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
