Choose OBS Studio if church volunteers need a visual, operator-friendly setup; choose FFmpeg if someone on the team can maintain command-line settings or scripts for a fixed looping playlist. Neither is proven more reliable for nonstop broadcasting, and neither guarantees an uninterrupted stream. YouTube’s ingest recommendations should guide the encoder settings, and a full test plus a plan for monitoring, recovery, and archiving is essential.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your church?
| Consideration | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A team that prefers a graphical workflow and visible control of scenes and sources. | An operator comfortable configuring and maintaining commands or scripts for a fixed playlist. |
| How you configure it | Choose a streaming service or custom server, enter the stream key, and set streaming and audio bitrates in the output settings. OBS also has separate recording configuration. | Configure inputs and output on the command line. The -stream_loop input option can loop a file; -stream_loop -1 means infinite input looping. |
| Looping and production | Scenes and sources are visually managed, but repeated playback depends on the source and configuration you choose. | Input looping is documented, but a command alone does not establish seamless transitions or reliable recovery after a network failure. |
| Reliability evidence | No comparative uptime evidence establishes that OBS is more reliable than FFmpeg. | No comparative uptime evidence establishes that FFmpeg is more reliable than OBS. |
This is a choice between operating styles, not a demonstrated reliability ranking. A local OBS or FFmpeg setup requires a computer running the encoder; no minimum specification is established here, because workload and encoding choices affect what is needed. In either case, assign someone to check YouTube’s stream health and know how the team will respond if the stream fails.
Set YouTube’s ingest settings before going live
Use YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance as the reference for protocol, encoding, and upload capacity. The figures below are YouTube’s published recommendations, accessed in 2026—not a guarantee that a particular church connection can sustain the stream.
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS is recommended. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate). |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| H.264 video bitrate | 5 Mbps for 1080p30; 6 Mbps for 720p60. |
| Stereo audio | AAC or MP3; 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz recommended. |
Choose a quality the available upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube advises running a speed test to check upload bitrate. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of stable capacity over a long broadcast, so test under conditions representative of the intended setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare the channel, source, and broadcast
- Confirm live access. Make sure the YouTube channel is enabled for live streaming, then create or select the intended live event.
- Choose the workflow. Use OBS for a graphical production workflow or FFmpeg for a command-driven, maintained setup. Confirm the computer can run the encoder with the chosen source and encoding workload; no universal minimum specification is established.
- Get the ingest details. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, select YouTube in the encoder if available, or copy the server URL. Enter the stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it beyond the people who need it.
- Set output and audio. Select a supported ingest protocol and configure video and audio settings using YouTube’s current recommendations above. Check that the upload connection has enough capacity for the selected output.
- Configure playback. In OBS, configure the source and playback behavior needed for the recording or playlist. In FFmpeg, configure the input and looping behavior; the official FFmpeg documentation describes
-stream_loop, with-1for indefinite input looping. Verify the actual file and loop boundary rather than assuming every recording repeats cleanly. - Run a representative test. Test with the intended video, audio, and motion, and check the loop transition and intended run duration. OBS recommends testing as thoroughly as possible before the first live stream; YouTube likewise says to test before going live.
- Start and monitor. Start streaming from the encoder and monitor YouTube’s stream-health status and messages. Have a person or documented recovery plan ready to respond to interruptions.
Plan around long-running streams and archives
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise the same archive behavior for one continuous stream lasting longer than 12 hours. If the church needs an archive, decide in advance how to handle broadcast boundaries and whether to make an independent recording. Do not assume that an indefinitely looping input also creates an indefinitely archived YouTube broadcast.
Troubleshoot the likely failure points
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops: Check YouTube’s messages, the selected bitrate, and the upload connection. Confirm that the connection can sustain the chosen quality, then use the team’s recovery plan to restart or reconfigure the encoder as needed.
- The stream key or server details do not work: Verify that the encoder has the intended YouTube server URL and current stream key, and that the key has not been exposed or replaced. Re-enter the correct details before starting again.
- Playback stops or the loop is wrong: Check the source and its playback configuration in OBS. In FFmpeg, verify that
-stream_loopis applied to the intended input. Test the full file and loop boundary; infinite input looping does not prove that every file will repeat seamlessly. - Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync: Check the encoder’s audio source and output settings, then test the actual recording with representative sound. Compare the configured format, bitrate, and sample rate with YouTube’s guidance.
- The broadcast runs past 12 hours and the archive is incomplete or unavailable: YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams shorter than 12 hours. Use planned broadcast boundaries and/or an independent recording when a full archive matters.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that keeps running without leaving a church computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video on YouTube, not a live camera feed. Start the free first day.
