Choose OBS Studio if you want hands-on control over scenes, sources, audio, and transitions; choose StreamYard if you want to produce a live show in a browser and bring guests into the workflow. OBS is free, open-source desktop software. StreamYard offers a browser-based studio with plan-dependent features such as multistreaming and recording. Neither product’s official descriptions establish that it is universally easier, more reliable, or better-performing.

When OBS is the better fit
OBS Studio is the stronger choice when you want to build and control a production yourself. Its scene-based workflow can combine sources such as window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. It also includes audio mixing and filters, transitions, hotkeys, Studio Mode, Multiview, and plugin or script extensibility.
That flexibility is useful for gaming streams with custom layouts, overlays, multiple scenes, or detailed audio routing. It also means you configure and operate the desktop software rather than relying on a ready-made browser studio. OBS is free and open source; the OBS Project describes it as software for video recording and live streaming. See OBS Studio

When StreamYard is the better fit
StreamYard is a plausible choice when you want to produce a live show in a browser and make guest participation part of the workflow. Its first-steps material describes a browser studio; its paid features and help pages cover multistreaming, guest participation, recordings, custom RTMP destinations, local recordings, and reusable studios, with availability depending on plan.
StreamYard’s official multistreaming help lists three destinations on Core, eight on Advanced, and ten on Business. Those limits can change, and a destination count does not guarantee that every platform or account is compatible. Check the current plan details and confirm the services you intend to connect before subscribing. StreamYard · Multistreaming plan limits

Multistreaming: check what “multiple platforms” means
If simultaneous output to several services is essential, StreamYard documents multistreaming on paid plans and specifies plan-based destination counts. OBS’s product page says it supports streaming platforms, but does not establish a native multistream destination count. Do not treat support for a platform as proof of simultaneous multistreaming; check the exact workflow, platform compatibility, and plan or setup requirements before committing.
Recording and replays
OBS
OBS is designed for both streaming and recording. It may suit creators who want to record locally as part of a desktop production and manage those files in their own editing workflow.

OBS system compatibility
The OBS Project’s requirements page lists Windows 10 and 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux or Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and an X window system or Wayland. That page is dated 2021, so verify requirements against the current OBS release. OBS cautions that a compatible system does not guarantee it can stream or record successfully: CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its requirements page recommends trying the Auto Configuration Wizard. OBS system requirements

StreamYard browser and connection recommendations
StreamYard recommends a current desktop browser, at least 5 Mbps upload and download, Ethernet when possible, a modern quad-core processor, and at least 4 GB of RAM, with 6–8 GB recommended. These are vendor recommendations and starting points, not a guarantee for every stream or production. The help page also notes browser-specific feature limitations; check it for current device and browser guidance. StreamYard help
For either option, test the actual computer, browser or application, network, camera, and production configuration. A system that launches the software may still struggle with the workload you give it.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose OBS if granular scene and audio control, extensibility, or a no-subscription software option matters most and you are comfortable configuring desktop software.
- Choose StreamYard if a browser studio and guest-oriented workflow matter more, and the plan’s destination and recording limits suit your needs.
- Check the actual workload before deciding: test your computer and network with the camera, scenes, guests, and quality you intend to use.
- Verify plan details if you need multistreaming or particular recording features; plan inclusions, limits, and prices can change.
