Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For an OBS stream using NVENC, set the streaming Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds for YouTube Live. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. Set this in OBS’s streaming encoder controls—not the separate recording settings.
Set the OBS streaming keyframe interval to 2 seconds
- In OBS, open Settings, then Output.
- Set Output Mode to Advanced if the streaming encoder controls are not visible.
- Open the Streaming tab and find Keyframe Interval in the encoder settings.
- Enter 2 seconds, then apply the change. Confirm you changed the streaming encoder, not the separate recording encoder.
OBS labels and available controls can vary by version and encoder. If your control takes a frame count rather than seconds, use the outgoing frame rate: at 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120 frames. OBS documents additional NVENC options, including frame-based keyint controls, for OBS 31.0 and later; prefer the standard Keyframe Interval control when available rather than applying a custom option that may not match your version.
Why YouTube recommends two seconds
YouTube Help’s live encoder settings recommend a keyframe frequency of two seconds and set a ceiling of four seconds. NVIDIA’s YouTube-specific OBS guidance also recommends a two-second interval. Together, they make two seconds the practical setting for an OBS NVENC stream sent to YouTube Live.
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as accepted live video codecs, and its keyframe-frequency guidance appears in the encoder settings for live streams. The interval is independent of bitrate, resolution, and frame rate: it specifies how often keyframes occur, not how much data the stream sends or its picture dimensions.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the rest of the streaming output separately
Keyframe interval is only one encoder setting. YouTube publishes separate live encoder guidance for bitrate and other settings, so changing the interval does not configure those automatically. NVIDIA’s guide also discusses CBR for YouTube streaming, but codec recommendations can depend on GPU generation; the keyframe setting itself does not require a particular codec choice beyond using an accepted YouTube codec.
Troubleshoot a missing or ineffective setting
- You cannot find Keyframe Interval: Check that Output Mode is Advanced and that you are looking under Streaming rather than Recording. OBS versions and encoder paths may expose different controls.
- Your field uses frames: Convert two seconds using the actual outgoing frame rate—60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. Do not use the recording frame rate if it differs from the stream.
- You changed the interval but YouTube still reports an issue: Verify the streaming encoder’s saved value and check other encoder settings, such as bitrate, separately. The keyframe interval does not set bitrate or resolution.
- You are considering a custom NVENC option: OBS’s additional NVENC options begin with version 31.0, and advanced labels or controls may differ across releases. Use the normal interval field when possible; do not assume one custom-option string applies to every OBS version and encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that stays live around the clock rather than a camera or gameplay broadcast, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered on at home. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. Learn more at StreamNeo, then start your free day.
