A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For a prerecorded video going live through OBS, set the output to 2560×1440 at 60 fps, use CBR, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. At 1440p60, YouTube’s recommended bitrate is 34 Mbps for H.264 or 24 Mbps for AV1 and H.265. Choose the bitrate for the codec you are actually sending, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the full stream with headroom.
Recommended OBS output settings for 1440p60
These are YouTube’s encoder-ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of viewer-side playback quality. Use them when OBS encodes a prerecorded file into a live feed; the file’s playback settings and the outgoing live encoder settings are separate.
| Setting | Recommended value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 2560×1440 | Use this when the source, encoder, and connection can sustain it. |
| Frame rate | 60 fps | YouTube accepts live frame rates up to 60 fps. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingest. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 | Choose a codec supported by both the OBS encoder available on your system and the YouTube stream configuration. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit | YouTube’s SDR guidance; use progressive scan and square pixels. |
| Stereo audio | AAC or MP3, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz | For 5.1 audio, YouTube lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS where available | YouTube describes RTMPS as the encrypted version of RTMP. |
For current encoder values and supported settings, see YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. OBS labels and available encoder controls vary by installed version and hardware; do not assume every system exposes the same codec or options.
Choose the bitrate for your codec

| Ingest codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
Use the row matching the codec actually selected in OBS. These are YouTube’s encoder-ingest recommendations, not a promise that a given viewer will receive a particular playback resolution or codec. Do not substitute a generic 1080p figure or treat the H.264 and AV1/H.265 recommendations as interchangeable.
Check upload capacity before going live
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; its reviewed guidance page does not state a publication year (accessed 2026-10-03). Plan around the full outgoing bitrate, including audio, and allow for other devices or services using the same connection.

- Run an upload speed test, but treat it as a snapshot rather than proof of sustained stability.
- Choose a stream bitrate that leaves the recommended headroom and remains stable under your normal network use.
- If the connection cannot sustain the selected codec’s recommended bitrate with headroom, reduce the outgoing bitrate or use a lower output target rather than assuming the stream will remain healthy.

Send a prerecorded video through OBS to a scheduled YouTube Live event
A prerecorded video is not uploaded to YouTube as a finished live stream: OBS plays it locally and sends the encoded output to YouTube’s live ingest. Source playback behavior in OBS is separate from the bitrate and keyframe requirements for that outgoing feed.

- Prepare the video source in OBS. Add the prerecorded file as a media source in the current OBS interface, and confirm it plays with the expected picture and sound. OBS controls for adding, looping, and timing media can vary by version; verify their current labels in the OBS version you have installed. Do not confuse a source’s playback or loop controls with output encoder settings.
- Set the outgoing encoder. Configure 2560×1440 output at 60 fps if your source, encoder, and connection can sustain it. Select a supported codec, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and that codec’s matching 1440p60 bitrate from YouTube’s table above.
- Create or schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using an encoder. YouTube’s instructions cover the stream URL and key used by the encoder; handle the key as a secret and do not publish it.
- Connect OBS and check the preview. Enter the event’s stream URL and key in the encoder settings, start streaming from OBS, and wait for the Live Control Room preview before starting the event.
- Test and monitor. YouTube advises setting up an encoder event at least two hours ahead, starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, testing representative movement and audio, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health while live.
- Verify any local recording. If you are keeping a local archive, check that it is intact rather than assuming the live feed also produced a usable recording.
YouTube explains the event, stream URL/key, scheduling, and preview workflow in its guide to creating a live stream with an encoder. Scheduling can help promote an event and let viewers receive reminders.
Common problems and what to check
- Stream health reports instability: Check whether the actual upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate with headroom. Account for audio and competing network traffic; a single speed test does not establish continuous stability.
- Bitrate does not match the codec: Confirm the encoder codec selected in OBS, then use its 1440p60 row in YouTube’s table. H.264’s recommended value differs from AV1/H.265.
- Video looks wrong or misses the target: Confirm the output is 2560×1440 at 60 fps, and that the source and encoder can sustain those settings. The ingest recommendation alone cannot guarantee a particular viewer-side playback quality.
- Event has no preview: Check that OBS has the correct event stream URL and key, that the encoder is sending, and that you have allowed time for the Live Control Room preview to appear before starting the event.
- Keyframe configuration is rejected or flagged: Set the interval to 2 seconds; YouTube recommends that value and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio is missing or unsuitable: Check the audio track and output format. YouTube’s stereo guidance is AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz; its 5.1 guidance is AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
- Prerecorded source stops or behaves unexpectedly: Verify the media source’s playback and loop behavior in your installed OBS version. Those controls are not the same as YouTube ingest settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
