You can broadcast a bhajan playlist to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but only if your source files, FFmpeg build, encoder hardware and upload connection can sustain the chosen 4K/60 output. For SDR H.264, YouTube’s current English guidance recommends 50 Mbps video bitrate at 2160p60 (14 Mbps minimum), CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Treat the workflow below as a configuration-dependent starting point, not a tested command: verify it with your own media and FFmpeg version before scheduling a stream.
What you need before building the stream
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, a stream created in YouTube Live Control Room, and its stream key. Keep the key private; use a placeholder in command examples and substitute the real key locally.
- Bhajan video files with known resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, aspect ratio and audio presence.
- An FFmpeg build and computer capable of encoding or passing through the chosen format in real time. A 4K/60 output setting cannot add detail to lower-resolution footage, and changing frame rate does not create genuine 60 fps motion.
- A stable connection with enough measured upload capacity for the total stream bitrate plus headroom.
YouTube’s current English encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 as encoder options over RTMP/RTMPS. The bitrate figures below are YouTube specifications, not predictions of audience quality or machine performance. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and confirm it before streaming because platform recommendations can change.
Choose the 4K/60 output target
SDR H.264: the straightforward target
For H.264 at 4K/2160p and 60 fps, YouTube recommends 50 Mbps and lists 14 Mbps as the minimum. The recommended value is a video bitrate target, so allow additional capacity for audio and network headroom. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds between keyframes.
AV1 or H.265
YouTube lists 35 Mbps recommended and 10 Mbps minimum for AV1 or H.265 at 4K/60. Use one only if your installed FFmpeg build, encoder hardware or software, and YouTube ingest path support it. Codec availability alone does not establish that a given computer can encode it at 4K/60 in real time.

Keep SDR and HDR settings separate
For a standard SDR stream, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth. HDR has separate requirements, including a supported HDR codec and 10-bit depth; do not apply HDR settings to ordinary SDR files or assume SDR sources become HDR by changing an output flag. Check the applicable codec guidance for your intended signal.
Inspect and prepare the playlist
Check every source file
Use a media inspection tool such as FFmpeg’s ffprobe to examine each file before composing the playlist. Record its video dimensions, frame rate, codec, aspect ratio, audio stream and audio format. Look for differences between files: a playlist mixing frame rates, dimensions, codecs, time bases or audio layouts may need normalization or re-encoding rather than stream-copying. If a file is not 4K, upscaling can make the output frame 2160p but cannot restore detail absent from the source.

Use concat only when the files are compatible
FFmpeg documents the concat demuxer for reading a sequence of media files. It also documents -re, which reads an input at its native rate and can be useful for pacing file input in real time. Neither feature guarantees that any arbitrary collection of videos can be joined, played seamlessly or looped indefinitely. Exact behavior depends on the files, command structure and installed FFmpeg version. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the relevant input and demuxer behavior.
Stream-copy avoids re-encoding but is appropriate only when the playlist files’ streams and parameters are compatible with the output and with one another. Otherwise, re-encoding or preparing normalized intermediate files may be necessary. Test transitions: differences in timestamps, stream parameters or audio can produce gaps, errors or playback problems. Do not describe a playlist as seamless until you have verified its actual transitions.

Configure YouTube Live and FFmpeg
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Select the stream settings and copy the stream key privately. Do not paste it into public documentation, screenshots, or a shared command history.
- Select a codec and target. For a typical SDR workflow, choose H.264 and target 2160p at 60 fps only if the source material and encoder can support it. Use YouTube’s 50 Mbps recommended H.264 video bitrate for this target; AV1 or H.265 has a different recommendation.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Follow YouTube’s recommendation for CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. How these settings are expressed depends on the FFmpeg encoder you use, so consult that encoder’s options and verify the resulting stream.
- Configure audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for the cited RTMP/RTMPS settings. Its advanced recommendation for stereo audio is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. Confirm the playlist contains usable audio and that the chosen encoding path maps it correctly.
- Choose the protocol and destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Use the ingest address and key shown for your broadcast, and keep the key out of any command you publish. A command should use a private local substitution or other secret-handling method rather than a real key in an example.
- Build and validate the playlist input. Use the concat demuxer only when the source files meet its requirements; apply real-time pacing where appropriate. Looping and output options are command- and version-dependent, so confirm the exact syntax against your installed FFmpeg documentation and test it with representative files.
There is no universal FFmpeg command that can be responsibly promised to work for every bhajan playlist: source compatibility, encoder choice, FFmpeg build and loop behavior all matter. No command here has been tested. Before relying on a configuration, confirm its actual output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio and keyframe cadence in a private test stream.
Check upload capacity and stability
YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Plan using total outbound bitrate, including audio, rather than the video target alone; download speed is not a substitute for upload capacity. For a 50 Mbps H.264 video target, your connection needs to carry more than that target once audio and the recommended margin are included. Measure upload performance under realistic conditions and avoid relying on a shared or unstable connection where possible. YouTube’s Streaming tips cover bandwidth and preparation.

Preflight, start and monitor the broadcast
- Test representative content. Use clips with both audio and motion, including the kinds of transitions present in the playlist. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the intended resolution and frame rate. Listen for audio dropouts, clipping or silence, and watch for visual artifacts or unexpected transitions.
- Read stream-health messages. Investigate dropped frames, unstable delivery, bitrate warnings and encoder overload before the scheduled broadcast. A technically configured 4K/60 output does not prove that the connection or computer can sustain it.
- Start early and keep monitoring. YouTube recommends setting up well in advance, starting the encoder before the scheduled event, checking the preview and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.
Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not receive a signal: verify the selected ingest destination, the stream key and RTMPS settings in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube rather than continuing to use it.
- Frames drop or the stream buffers: compare actual total outbound bitrate with measured upload capacity, restore the 20% headroom, and check whether the connection is shared or unstable. If the encoder is overloaded, reduce the target or use an encoding option the machine can sustain.
- The output is not really 4K/60: inspect source properties and the received preview. Check that the output configuration and encoder support the target; upscaling low-resolution footage does not create native 4K detail.
- FFmpeg errors at a playlist transition: check whether adjacent files have compatible streams and parameters, and inspect timestamps and audio layouts. Re-encode or normalize incompatible files, or revise the playlist construction; do not assume concat or loop behavior is identical across versions.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: confirm that each intended file contains audio and that the output maps and encodes the desired stream. Test representative transitions and verify audio in the preview before the event.
- The picture looks wrong: ensure SDR material is configured as SDR with Rec. 709 and 8-bit guidance, rather than mixing it with HDR requirements. Check the chosen codec and output path as well as the source color properties.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks for bhajan playlists
Devotional subject matter does not by itself establish that a recording is free to use. Check that you have the rights needed for every composition and recording in the playlist, including any arrangement, performance, backing track or video you did not create. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if rights holders or YouTube identify a problem. Separately, using a continuous or repetitive playlist does not guarantee monetization: YouTube’s monetization decisions depend on its applicable policies and the channel’s content, not just the fact that a stream is live. Review the current rules in YouTube Studio and obtain permission where needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
