Choose an OBS bitrate your shared connection can sustain—not simply the highest bitrate YouTube recommends for your resolution. YouTube’s figures are targets for sending video to its ingest servers; they do not tell you how much upload capacity your household has available. Test while the connection is being used as it will be during the stream, watch OBS and YouTube’s health indicators, and lower bitrate or resolution if delivery is unstable.
Choose a YouTube bitrate that fits your shared upload capacity
YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are recommendations for the video sent to YouTube, not household-speed requirements or guarantees that a shared connection can sustain them. YouTube also publishes minimum values; consult its current encoder settings and bitrate table for those and any updates.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, 1080p at 60 fps has a YouTube recommendation of 12 Mbps with AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps with H.264. That does not mean a speed test showing 17 Mbps upload makes a 17 Mbps stream safe: other people and devices may use capacity during the broadcast, and actual delivery can fluctuate.
Set up OBS and test under realistic conditions
- Pick the output you need. Decide on resolution, frame rate, and a codec supported by your encoder and YouTube workflow. Match the appropriate row in YouTube’s table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- Measure upload performance. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Run it at a time and under household conditions resembling the planned stream. A single speed-test result is a snapshot, not reserved bandwidth for OBS.
- Set a bitrate target in OBS. Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate as the quality target only if the connection can reliably accommodate it alongside other use. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting gives 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point. Treat that as a starting estimate, not a guarantee—especially on a shared connection where other users can consume bandwidth.
- Rehearse before going live. Run an unlisted or otherwise safe test with representative gameplay motion and audio. Watch OBS for dropped frames and check YouTube’s stream-health status and messages. YouTube recommends testing with the same audio and video conditions you expect during the event.
- Adjust and repeat if delivery is unstable. Reduce the bitrate, output resolution, or frame rate, then test again. Choose a setting that remains stable during realistic shared use instead of preserving a higher resolution at the cost of interruptions.
Use the relevant OBS output settings
For YouTube ingest, the documented setup includes RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. In OBS, find these options under Settings > Output for encoder and rate control, and Settings > Video for output resolution and frame rate. The precise encoder choices depend on your hardware and OBS version. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the selected encoder exposes that control, and verify the current YouTube requirements before streaming if you use a different setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the stream key for the YouTube channel and live event you intend to broadcast, and keep it private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to that destination. YouTube’s live encoder documentation describes the platform settings; its LiveStreams API documentation also describes stream health and configuration warnings, including bitrate and keyframe issues.
Diagnose dropped frames before changing everything
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Separate a capacity problem from local network instability or a problem along the ISP-to-ingest route; the remedy differs.

- Dropped frames when the household is busy: The stream may be competing for limited upload capacity. Lower the video bitrate and test again; if needed, reduce output resolution or frame rate.
- Unstable Wi-Fi: OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends wired networking when Wi-Fi is suspected. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is one optional way to test a wired connection; no particular cable category is established as necessary here. Ethernet can improve the local link’s reliability, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your ISP or remove congestion farther along the route.
- Instability despite a lower bitrate or wired connection: OBS suggests trying a different ingest server where applicable, enabling network optimizations and TCP pacing on Windows, and testing dynamic bitrate. Dynamic bitrate can reduce bitrate during congestion, but that can lower video quality and does not fix the underlying network cause. If the issue persists, OBS recommends contacting your ISP, because congestion or routing changes may be outside your control.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video live on YouTube around the clock rather than stream gameplay live from OBS, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
