If your OBS stream stops as soon as your computer sleeps, keep the computer awake for the broadcast. Change the computer’s sleep timeout—not just the screen-off timeout. The display can turn off while the computer stays awake, allowing OBS to continue working.
Why sleep disconnects an OBS stream
When a computer sleeps, it is no longer in its normal working state. OBS therefore cannot continue sending the stream while the computer is asleep. This is an application of operating-system power-state behavior, not a test of a particular OBS and YouTube setup. Microsoft documents separate screen and sleep timeouts, so turning off the display does not have to mean putting the computer to sleep.
Change the sleep setting on Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Find the sleep timeout for the power condition you will use during the stream, especially Plugged in.
- Set it long enough to cover the broadcast, or disable sleep for that condition if the option is available.
- Set the screen-off timeout separately if you want the display to turn off while the computer remains awake.
These are the current Windows 11 settings documented by Microsoft’s power and sleep guidance. Options can vary on Windows 10, managed computers, or systems with manufacturer-specific power controls.
Keep a Mac laptop awake while the display is off
- Plug the Mac into its power adapter.
- Open System Settings > Battery.
- Enable Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off.
- Before relying on it for a broadcast, confirm the Mac stays awake with the display off.

Test the setting before a broadcast
- Connect the computer to the power source you intend to use for streaming.
- Apply the appropriate sleep timeout or Mac power-adapter setting.
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream and let the display turn off, if that is how you plan to use the computer.
- Confirm the computer stays awake and OBS continues transmitting for the required period.
- After the test, verify that your normal sleep settings are restored or intentionally left configured for streaming.
If OBS disconnects while the computer stays awake
That points away from sleep as the immediate cause. Diagnose the network separately. OBS lists Wi-Fi instability, network software, drivers, and hardware among possible sources of connection problems. Its guidance is for dropped frames and intermittent connection issues, not specifically for OS sleep interrupting a YouTube stream.
- Try Ethernet if Wi-Fi may be unstable. OBS recommends a wired connection as a troubleshooting measure. A cable can help isolate a wireless problem; it does not prevent a computer from sleeping.
- Check network software. Temporarily investigate whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus software, or network-prioritization utility is interfering.
- Check drivers and the network path. Consider hardware only after reasonable diagnosis; if troubleshooting does not resolve the connection issue, OBS suggests contacting your ISP.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback. OBS says it may reduce quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.

What OBS automatic reconnect can—and cannot—do
OBS has an automatic reconnect control under Settings > Advanced. It can help recover from a transient connection loss. It does not keep OBS transmitting while the computer is asleep, so first prevent sleep if the stream ends when the machine sleeps.
