How to Keep Music Between Podcast Episodes in a YouTube Live Playlist

YouTube podcast playlists organize episodes but do not add music between them. For a guaranteed live interlude, sequence the music and episodes in the production workflow sending your stream.

You can keep music playing between podcast episodes in a YouTube livestream by placing the episode playback and music in the production workflow that sends one continuous stream to YouTube. A YouTube podcast playlist organizes published episodes; it does not automatically insert music between them. If you only need to organize episodes for later listening, use the playlist. If you need every live viewer to hear an interlude, control it in the live production system.

Choose the right setup for your goal

What you want Use What it does not do
Organize published podcast episodes A YouTube podcast playlist, with full-length episodes arranged in listening order It does not insert music between episodes. YouTube’s podcast guidance describes a show as a playlist and episodes as videos in that playlist.
Play episodes and music continuously during one live broadcast Sequence episode playback and music in the encoder or production system sending the live signal to YouTube The exact configuration depends on that software; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not specify product-specific interstitial steps. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream.
Move viewers to another live event after a stream ends Live Redirect, configured in YouTube Studio It is an end-of-stream handoff, not a way to play music between videos. Redirect eligibility and permissions apply.

Set up a continuous live interlude

  1. Prepare the sequence. In your encoder or live production software, arrange the first episode, the music interlude, and the next episode in the order you want them played. The sources and controls vary by software; YouTube’s general encoder instructions do not define a universal playlist or interstitial-music button.
  2. Send the combined program to YouTube Live. Use the encoder-based streaming workflow for your broadcast. Confirm that the correct live event and stream key are selected in your production setup before going live; do not expose the stream key publicly.
  3. Run a test and listen through transitions. Check that the episode audio ends cleanly, the music begins at the intended level, and the next episode starts without silence or overlap. YouTube advises testing and monitoring audio and video while streaming.
  4. Monitor the live output. Keep an eye on the audio meters and listen to the program throughout the stream. A source can be playing locally while its audio is missing or too quiet in the outgoing live mix.

Why playlists, autoplay, and queues do not make a reliable interlude

Podcast playlists organize episodes

YouTube describes a podcast as a playlist of full-length episode videos arranged in intended listening order. That organization does not document automatic music insertion between episodes. Eligibility can also be limited: some playlists may not qualify for podcast features, including content the creator does not own. See YouTube’s podcast guidance.

Series playlists mark a set, not a broadcast sequence

A series playlist identifies videos as an official set meant to be watched together. You need a verified account, and you may include only videos you uploaded and have rights to. The feature does not document an option to insert music between videos. Details are in YouTube’s series playlist guidance.

Viewer queues and autoplay are viewer-controlled

A queue lets an individual viewer arrange what to watch next; it is not a creator-controlled broadcast schedule. On desktop, a queue does not persist after the browser closes, and mobile queueing requires Premium. Autoplay may start a related video, but viewers can turn it off and YouTube may stop it after inactivity or ask whether they are still watching. Neither feature guarantees that every viewer hears a chosen music item. See queue guidance and autoplay guidance.

When Live Redirect is useful

Live Redirect can send viewers to a selected Premiere or another livestream when the current stream ends. It does not play a music bed between episodes within one stream. YouTube says creators need more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes to send redirects; redirecting viewers to another channel’s live stream also requires that channel’s permission. Set it up in YouTube Studio and check current eligibility details in YouTube’s Live Redirect instructions.

Check music rights before broadcasting

Only use music you have the rights to use in a YouTube livestream. Playlist eligibility can also depend on ownership and rights to the videos included. Review the terms that apply to your music and episode content before broadcasting; an interlude in the production workflow does not itself grant permission to use a track.

Troubleshoot common interlude problems

  • Music plays in your software but viewers hear silence: Check that the music source is routed into the outgoing stream mix, not only to local monitoring, then test the live output.
  • The next episode starts before the music ends: Adjust the production sequence or playback behavior so the interlude finishes before the following episode begins.
  • There is a gap or an abrupt cut: Review the transitions and source timing in your production software, then test the sequence before the broadcast.
  • Some viewers do not hear the planned music after an episode: If relying on autoplay or a queue, that is expected behavior: those are viewer playback features, not a guaranteed creator-controlled interlude. Put the music in the continuous live program instead.
  • Redirect is not available or does not play music: Redirect is for the handoff after a stream ends, and its eligibility and permission requirements still apply. It is not an interstitial-music control.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded recordings, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not go live from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is an option for continuous uploaded-video playback, not a substitute for configuring a custom music interlude in your production system. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free first day.
