Start with OBS’s Stats window and the log: determine whether the rising counter is Dropped Frames (Network), Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag, or Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag. They point to different problems—network connection, rendering load, or encoding workload—so changing one bitrate or encoder setting is not a universal fix. Without your OBS log, settings, hardware, and network measurements, the exact cause cannot be identified.
Identify which kind of frames are being lost
In OBS, open View > Stats while reproducing the problem. Record which counter rises and whether it starts when you begin recording. Also note the stream resolution, frame rate and bitrate; both stream and recording encoders; and the time the issue begins. Use OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide and Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide to distinguish the causes.
- Dropped Frames (Network): OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to YouTube’s ingest server at the configured bitrate. Investigate upload capacity and the network path.
- Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag: OBS cannot render and composite frames in time. GPU load or another system bottleneck may be responsible.
- Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag: the encoder cannot finish encoding within the available time. Reduce encoding workload or use a suitable supported hardware encoder.
Streaming and recording at once can expose a resource limit, but the counter—not the fact that both outputs are active—determines which branch to troubleshoot.
If rendering lag rises, free GPU and scene capacity
Reduce competing GPU load
For a game stream, cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, then lower demanding graphics settings if needed. Close other GPU-heavy programs you recognize and test again. On Windows, OBS lists Run as Administrator as a quick fix that can help with GPU overload; it is not a remedy for network drops or every rendering problem.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Lower the work OBS must render
Temporarily simplify busy scenes, disable expensive filters, use less demanding media where practical, and reduce or resize browser sources. Test one change at a time so you can tell which one helps.
If the rendering counter still rises, try a lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS notes that frame rate affects both rendering and encoding and suggests testing 30 fps if 60 fps is not working reliably. Changing the base canvas can require repositioning sources, so leave it alone unless the system is severely constrained.

If encoding lag rises, inspect both outputs
Recording and streaming have separate output settings, and the machine has to handle both encoders. Check the stream and recording encoders and their workloads rather than changing only one by guesswork. Lower the workload or preset where applicable, then test under the same game and scene load that caused the problem.
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it moves encoding work from the CPU to specialized GPU components. Availability depends on the operating system and hardware, and older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality. Switching to a GPU encoder is not guaranteed to help if the GPU is already saturated rendering the game and OBS scene.

Recording quality baselines are not performance guarantees
OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide, dated 2023-11-30, recommends Simple output mode for ease of use. For Advanced mode, it gives these encoder-specific recording baselines:
- NVENC: Constant QP 16–23, P5, High Quality tuning, two-pass quarter-resolution multipass, look-ahead off.
- x264: CRF 16–23 and the “veryfast” CPU preset.
- AMD: CQP 16–23 and Quality preset.
These are starting points from that guide, not universal fixes for an overloaded machine. Within the cited guide’s quality scale, a lower quality-number setting increases quality and file size. If the current setup overloads the system, prioritize stable output over a more demanding recording configuration.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If network-dropped frames rise, stabilize the stream path
Test whether your upload connection can sustain the stream bitrate consistently, then reduce the OBS stream bitrate if it cannot. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a guarantee: available capacity can vary, and other network use competes for it. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate instead of applying one bitrate to every setup.
If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired connection before buying anything. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, says “WiFi may be unstable for streaming” and recommends wired streaming. If a wired link is already in use, check the cable and devices as possible causes; replacing a cable is relevant only to a suspect network link, not rendering or encoding lag.

OBS also identifies VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, outdated network drivers, router or modem issues, and faulty cables or network devices as possible contributors. Change or disable software only if you can do so safely and understand the security trade-off. Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality to cope with a changing connection, but it does not repair the underlying network path.
Use YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate; check the live settings page for your target format and connection rather than treating one number as universal. The retrieved page does not show a publication date.
Test the fix under the load that caused the problem
- Open View > Stats and note the relevant counter before testing.
- Reproduce the setup that normally triggers the issue: same game or workload, scene collection, stream bitrate and recording mode.
- Change one relevant setting at a time—network settings for network drops, rendering load for rendering lag, or encoder workload for encoding lag.
- Include audio and movement comparable to the planned stream. YouTube recommends testing with representative content before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.
- Check the Stats counters again. Keep a change only if it reduces the relevant problem without making the picture or recording quality unacceptable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping OBS and a recording computer running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This is for looping uploaded video to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Start the free day.
