The event creates a viewer-facing page; a separate encoder running on a spare PC, VPS, or managed cloud service must send the video to YouTube using the event’s server URL and stream key. Choose a spare PC if you have suitable equipment, reliable home upload, and want direct control. Choose a VPS if you want the encoder off your home network and are prepared to administer a hosted server. Neither option guarantees uninterrupted streaming, and YouTube does not prescribe a minimum PC or VPS specification for this workload.
What YouTube scheduling does—and does not do
A scheduled event is useful when you want a watch page to share ahead of time and give viewers a chance to set reminders. It does not run a playlist or start an encoder. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. The encoder sends the feed using the event’s server URL and stream key. In YouTube’s Live Streaming API terminology, a liveBroadcast is the event viewers watch; a liveStream carries the audio-video content and its delivery settings. That distinction matters for a 24/7 playlist: Studio handles the event, while a process on a PC, a remote server, or a cloud playlist service supplies the continuing feed. Scheduling the page alone cannot replace that process.
Spare PC versus VPS for a continuous playlist

These are operational trade-offs, not measured head-to-head performance results. The cited YouTube guidance does not recommend a VPS provider or give a minimum configuration for a prerecorded 24/7 stream. Before committing to hardware or a hosting plan, test your actual video, bitrate, and encoder settings in the environment you intend to use.

How to schedule the event and run your own encoder
- Create the viewer-facing event. In YouTube Studio, use the live-stream scheduling workflow to create an event if you want a shareable watch page and reminders. Scheduling is optional for the encoder itself; it is the event-promotion step, not the playlist runner.
- Choose the machine that will stay available. For the spare-PC route, use a computer you can leave powered and connected. For the VPS route, confirm with the host that the operating system, sustained resources, storage, network use, and outbound data terms suit your encoder and stream. YouTube does not specify a minimum VPS plan.
- Set up the encoder and playlist. Use encoder software that supports the workflow you need, and configure it to play the recording or playlist continuously. Match its output settings to the source and the stream settings you intend to use. Test the actual workload rather than assuming a machine is suitable based on its label or advertised tier.
- Connect the feed to the event. Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings, then start the encoder. Keep the key private: someone who has it may be able to publish to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
- Verify the live result. Check the watch page and YouTube’s live status after starting. Confirm that the intended video is playing and that audio and video remain stable. A scheduled page existing is not proof that the encoder is sending a feed.
- Test unattended recovery. Before relying on the setup, simulate or safely test the failures you can control: encoder restart, machine reboot, and a brief network interruption. Confirm what restarts automatically and what requires you to reconnect or restart the encoder.
YouTube also supports different delivery approaches. Its HLS guidance applies only if you choose HLS; it is not a requirement for a playlist stream. For HLS, YouTube specifies 1–4 second segments, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube notes HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Consult YouTube’s HLS setup guidance before configuring that protocol.
Reliability checks for either setup
On a spare PC
- Disable sleep or other power-saving behavior that could stop the encoder.
- Decide how the encoder starts after a reboot and whether it restarts if the process exits.
- Check the home upload connection and power arrangement against the actual stream workload.
- Arrange a way to notice a stopped feed; an unattended machine cannot be assumed to have recovered merely because it is powered on.
On a VPS
- Confirm that the selected plan can sustain the encoding workload and continuous outbound stream; a VPS label alone does not establish capacity.
- Check traffic allowances, transfer charges, storage, operating-system support, and any restrictions with the provider.
- Configure startup supervision and remote monitoring, and verify recovery after a reboot or network interruption.
- Keep access credentials and the YouTube stream key protected, and document how you will reach the server if the encoder stops.
Archive limits for streams longer than 12 hours
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one continuous 24/7 broadcast will appear as a single complete archive. If a full recording matters, plan and verify an archive workflow separately rather than assuming the live broadcast will produce one complete replay.

Choose by the dependency you can manage
Start with the spare PC if you already own suitable equipment, trust your home connection for the workload, and are willing to manage sleep, restarts, monitoring, and recovery. Consider a VPS if moving the encoder away from home solves a real availability problem and you have confirmed the host’s capacity and full data costs. A managed cloud playlist service is the alternative when you would rather not operate either machine. In all cases, scheduling the YouTube event and keeping the feed running are separate jobs.
