Before following any button advice, identify your version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: the Nintendo 64 original and Ocarina of Time 3D do not use identical controls. On N64, watch the on-screen action icon before pressing A; use Z-targeting to keep opponents in view and improve your positioning. The game’s early area, Kokiri Forest, is a good place to practice movement and combat before you feel confident.

First, identify your version

This guide gives specific button names for the Nintendo 64 original unless it says otherwise. The Nintendo UK game page identifies that release as a Nintendo 64 title. If you are playing Ocarina of Time 3D, consult its official manual for your controls. It calls lock-on L-targeting and offers Hold and Switch settings; those directions should not be substituted for the N64 instructions below. Other ports may differ too, and the manuals cited here do not establish a complete control mapping for every release.

Nintendo also lists Ocarina of Time on its Nintendo Switch 2 product page. That listing is a separate platform reference, not evidence that the N64 button layout applies there. Check the instructions or in-game settings for the version you are actually playing.

How to read the N64 controls

The N64 manual maps the Control Stick to movement, A to a context-sensitive action, B to the sword, R to the shield, the C buttons to equipped items, Z to targeting or looking forward, and START to the subscreen. The key beginner habit is to check the action icon on screen before pressing A. Depending on the situation, the available action might be speaking, checking, opening, or something else. An action that is unavailable may appear in black and white or not appear at all, according to Nintendo’s N64 instruction manual.

The Control Stick is analog: how far you tilt it affects whether Link walks or runs. Near gaps or uneven ground, moving toward an edge may make Link jump or climb automatically, but the move can fail if the gap is too wide. At the water’s surface, holding A makes Link dive; the manual says his diving depth increases as the adventure progresses.

How to approach combat

Target first, then manage distance

On N64, Z-targeting is useful beyond simply selecting an enemy. Nintendo’s manual says it can help keep an opponent in view, let you hold distance or close in, and make attacks more accurate. It can also focus on certain people and objects. Treat it as an aiming and positioning aid, not a guarantee that every encounter will be easy. When targeting suitable enemies or objects, it can also let Navi offer advice.

Choose an attack for the opening

The manual documents vertical and horizontal sword swings, a stab, a charged spin swing, and a jump attack. A correctly timed three-hit sequence can make the third swing wider. A jump attack has double offensive power, while a charged spin swing consumes magic and grows more powerful depending on how long it is charged. These are options to learn, not a required combo for every opponent.

Defend and reposition

Hold R to raise the shield; the Control Stick can move it. Back flips and side jumps are evasive moves, and a roll attack can also help avoid damage. A useful beginner rhythm is to target an opponent, watch its movement, defend or dodge, then attack when there is an opening. This is practical advice based on the documented controls, not a universal rule that every enemy must be fought the same way.

How to explore without a walkthrough

Nintendo describes Hyrule Field as a central gateway to towns and regions, while dungeons bring together puzzles, enemies, treasure, and environmental obstacles. Its game description also presents items as tools for overcoming obstacles. For a first-time player, that suggests a simple way to investigate: pay attention to the action prompt, talk to people, look closely at unusual objects, and try a newly acquired item when something blocks progress. This is an exploratory approach, not a prescribed route.

New abilities can matter outside combat, too. Nintendo’s description says learned ocarina songs can open paths and affect the time of day. Keep an eye out for uses beyond the immediate situation, without assuming every item or ability is only for a nearby obstacle.

Where to practice first

Nintendo’s N64 manual offers a reassuring starting point: “The quickest way to finish the game is to effectively control Link in every situation.” It follows with, “Try practicing maneuvers at the beginning of the game, in Kokiri Forest.” Try basic movement, checking the A-button prompt, targeting, attacking, and guarding there before worrying about mastering every technique.

Both lines are from Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Nintendo 64 instruction manual; they are not attributed to a named speaker. The official manual and publisher descriptions cited here do not provide a relevant named statistic about beginner performance or completion.
