Ocarina of Time Dungeon Crawl #4: Why the Forest Temple Still Feels Like an All-Timer

Spoilers for the Forest Temple in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. In the fourth installment of Jim Norman’s weekly dungeon-by-dungeon retrospective, he makes the case for the Forest Temple as a favorite: a maze that feels open while quietly guiding players through its interlocking rooms. Its looping routes, four-torch challenge, unsettling atmosphere and Phantom Ganon fight are the parts that have stayed with him.

A dungeon that appears open, then makes you learn its shape

Norman’s central praise is that the Forest Temple brings together several strengths he enjoys in Zelda dungeons: a central hub, puzzles to solve, and a substantial central challenge built around lighting four torches. From the hub, several routes are visible, but not all can be taken immediately. Locked doors and blocked passages turn that apparent openness into a guided exploration of how the rooms connect.

That structure makes navigation part of the puzzle. A doorway in view is not necessarily a route you can reach yet, and progress depends on finding the right connection rather than simply checking every entrance. Norman singles out the twisting corridors, which can be turned and restored, alongside walkways that loop back on themselves. The layout asks players to form a mental map as they move through it.

The bow makes the temple’s routes click

Finding the bow is Norman’s satisfying turning point. It gives Link the means to hit eye switches, opening a way to revisit parts of the dungeon with a new tool. The reward is not only access: returning to earlier spaces makes the player’s developing understanding of the temple matter. Routes that once seemed like dead ends or distant openings can become meaningful once the right mechanism is available.

#1 Best Overall
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
  • This is the world edition. It has different packaging but is fully authentic and works on US region 3DS systems.
  • The Legend of Zelda veterans can look forward to the Master Quest - a second quest with revamped puzzles and redesigned dungeons.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a masterful improvement on one of the landmark releases in video game history.
  • “E10+”, w/Animated Blood, Fantasy Violence, Suggestive Themes

For Norman, the design’s pleasure comes from that relationship between exploration and spatial understanding. The temple can show you where you might go before it lets you get there, and the resulting backtracking feels purposeful when new abilities change what the rooms mean.

Unease is part of the Forest Temple’s design

Norman also remembers the dungeon for its mood. Long, empty corridors, falling checkered ceilings and the threat of Wallmasters make its spaces feel hostile even when nothing is immediately happening. He describes the looping music and strange, in-between quality of the place as unsettling. That atmosphere is inseparable from the layout: winding passages and repeated routes can make the temple feel less like a straightforward building than somewhere you might lose your bearings.

Phantom Ganon is a memorable final test

Norman describes the Phantom Ganon encounter as a fight that hinges on watching the running paintings before returning the boss’s power bolts. The visual cue makes observation central to the battle, rather than treating it as a simple exchange of attacks. He recalls that the encounter frightened him as a child and says it still unsettles him now; that lasting reaction is part of why the boss remains memorable for him.

What Norman would change in a remake

His affection for the dungeon does not mean he would leave every detail untouched. Norman would welcome shortcuts to later winding paths, a more detailed map that clarifies entrances and exits, and updated camera controls for the boss encounter. These are his design suggestions, not confirmed remake features. The article does not establish a remake’s release date or specifications.

Those proposals target the temple’s most demanding qualities: the amount of retracing, the effort required to understand the layout, and the camera during a set-piece fight. They would make navigation and combat clearer without removing the spatial puzzles that Norman sees as central to the dungeon’s appeal.

Why it remains an all-timer for Norman

Norman calls the Forest Temple a favorite, writing that it “might just be my favourite Zelda dungeon ever.” His case is not that it is flawless, but that its systems reinforce one another: the hub gives the player a point of reference, blocked routes encourage exploration, the bow changes how earlier spaces can be used, and the eerie presentation gives the labyrinth a distinctive character. The result, in his view, is a dungeon that rewards learning its shape as much as solving its individual puzzles.
