The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Nintendo 64 is the original; Ocarina of Time 3D is a 2011 remake with redesigned visuals, updated controls and extra modes. Emulation is not a single edition: how it looks and plays depends on the software, device, game release and settings. Choose based on the controls and presentation you want, the hardware you own, and which version you can access.
How the three options differ
| Option | What it is | What stands out | What varies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 64 | The original release of the game for Nintendo 64. Nintendo describes it as introducing 3D visuals to the series and a new combat system. Nintendo’s N64 product page | Original presentation and control scheme. | Playing on original hardware requires a Nintendo 64 and a compatible game copy. Current prices and condition were not established. |
| Nintendo 3DS | A Nintendo 3DS remake released in Europe on 17 June 2011. Nintendo’s 3DS product page and Nintendo UK’s 19 April 2011 announcement | Graphical overhaul, optional glasses-free stereoscopic 3D, Circle Pad movement, touchscreen inventory, gyro-assisted first-person aiming, and Master Quest and Boss Challenge modes. | Requires compatible Nintendo 3DS-family hardware and the 3DS game. Nintendo UK says new purchases through the 3DS-family eShop ended on 27 March 2023; that is UK market information, not a universal storefront statement. |
| Emulation | Running a particular game release in software on another device. | May be an option if you prefer your available device or input setup. | Visuals, controls, compatibility and performance depend on the emulator, its version, the device, game release and configuration. No universal best setup or performance ranking is established here. |
Is Ocarina of Time 3D just the original with a 3D effect?
No. Nintendo describes Ocarina of Time 3D as a remake with a complete graphical overhaul, and its changes extend to how you control the game and manage items. The glasses-free stereoscopic effect is produced by the Nintendo 3DS system itself, so a flat screenshot cannot show the full effect. The 3D presentation is a feature, not a requirement for playing the remake.
Nintendo’s official product description says the remake “retains the analogue control of the original, using the Circle Pad on Nintendo 3DS, but greatly improves ease of use with a touch-based inventory system.” That is Nintendo’s description of the product, rather than an independent assessment.
What changes in controls and interface?
Nintendo 64
The N64 version uses the original Nintendo 64 control scheme. Button-level instructions depend on the specific setup and are covered in Nintendo’s official Ocarina of Time Nintendo 64 manual.
#1 Best Overall
- This is the world edition. It has different packaging but is fully authentic and works on US region 3DS systems.
- The Legend of Zelda veterans can look forward to the Master Quest - a second quest with revamped puzzles and redesigned dungeons.
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a masterful improvement on one of the landmark releases in video game history.
- “E10+”, w/Animated Blood, Fantasy Violence, Suggestive Themes
Nintendo 3DS
- Movement: the Circle Pad provides analog control.
- Items: the touchscreen supports inventory management and item assignment.
- First-person aiming: the 3DS gyro sensor lets you look around by moving the system. Nintendo announced this feature on 19 April 2011; it is an option tied to the hardware, not evidence that every player will prefer motion aiming.
Emulation
Controls depend on the input device and the emulator’s mapping. An emulated game may not reproduce the 3DS touchscreen or gyro features as they work on original 3DS hardware. Without a named emulator, device and configuration, claims about how closely it matches either release would be speculative.
What extra content does the 3DS remake add?
Nintendo’s 2011 announcement names two additional modes:
- Master Quest: a more challenging version with changed puzzles and locations, a mirrored world and tougher enemies.
- Boss Challenge: lets players revisit bosses they have defeated, either individually or in sequence.
These are specific additions to the 3DS release. The available sources do not establish extra content for emulation generally; that depends on which game release is being run.
Which version should you choose?
- Choose Nintendo 64 if you want the original release and its original presentation and controls.
- Choose the 3DS remake if you want its visual overhaul, touchscreen inventory, Circle Pad control, optional stereoscopic 3D, gyro aiming or added modes—and have compatible 3DS-family hardware.
- Consider emulation only as a setup-specific option. To evaluate it meaningfully, identify the device, emulator and version, game release, and input configuration; the label “emulation” alone does not tell you how the game will perform.
For purchase access, Nintendo lists a physical 3DS Game Card edition on its product page. The UK eShop end date above applies to Nintendo UK’s stated market information; check the relevant local storefront and account context rather than assuming the same availability everywhere. A physical copy also requires compatible 3DS-family hardware.

What can—and can’t—be concluded about emulation and legality?
Emulation describes a way of running software, not one uniform product or experience. The sources cited here do not establish compatibility, performance, setup steps or a best emulator for any particular device. They also do not resolve the legality of every way of acquiring or using a game in every jurisdiction. Nintendo’s product-page warnings about unauthorized devices or software and the intellectual-property notices in its manuals do not, by themselves, answer every jurisdiction-specific legal question. Check authoritative guidance applicable to your location and circumstances.
