If a friend can’t join your co-op survival game, first check whether the game’s online service and the host’s session are available, then verify accounts, invite and lobby settings, game versions, and platform compatibility. Only after those checks should you troubleshoot Wi-Fi, firewalls, NAT, or ports. The right fix depends on the game, platform, hosting method, and exact error message—there is no universal invite or port-forwarding fix.
Start with the scope of the failure
Before changing network settings, work out whether the problem affects one session, one player, or all online play. Ask both players whether they can join other games or servers, whether the platform’s online service is available, and whether the problem began after a game or client update. Steam recommends checking its service status early in troubleshooting and notes that firewall permissions may need attention after an update. See Steam’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
- If only one friend cannot join, check that player’s account, game version, platform compatibility, and network.
- If nobody can join one person’s session, focus first on the host’s session mode, privacy settings, lobby capacity, and network path.
- If neither player can access other online sessions, check the platform service and each player’s broader connection before changing game-specific settings.
Keep the exact message—such as “failed to connect”—and note where it appears. An invite that never arrives, a join option that is unavailable, and a connection attempt that times out point to different parts of the process.
Check accounts, invites, and session settings
Confirm that both players are signed in to the platform and any separate game account the title requires. Then have the host verify that the session is actually online and joinable, rather than local or LAN-only. Check that the invite went to the intended account, the lobby is not full, privacy settings allow friends to join, and both players are using compatible game versions. Crossplay may need to be enabled, and it is not supported by every game or platform combination.

These checks depend on the game. For example, Stardew Valley’s official co-op announcement identifies sign-in, session mode, privacy, lobby capacity, and version mismatch as possible reasons a farm cannot be joined. Use the official support page for the survival game you are playing to confirm its own session rules.
On PlayStation 5
PlayStation says players can join through a friend’s profile, a joinable game group, or an invitation notification. The game must be installed and the group must have an open slot. Some games also require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, so check the current requirements for the specific game rather than assuming they are the same across titles. Test the local connection
- Close and reopen the game on both systems, then restart the platform client if applicable. Send a fresh invite after the host has loaded the joinable session.
- If either player is using Wi-Fi or a powerline adapter, test with a direct wired connection if practical. Steam identifies wireless and powerline links as possible causes of intermittent connection failures and recommends a wired test to help isolate link or router problems. - Retry the same session and note whether the result changes. A wired test can reveal an unstable local link; it cannot resolve a service outage, incompatible crossplay, mismatched versions, or every NAT or firewall problem.
Check firewall, NAT, and hosting type
On a computer, make sure the game and platform client are allowed through the operating system’s firewall. Steam advises allowing its executables TCP and UDP access when prompted. If temporarily turning off a firewall changes the result, turn it back on and correct the specific permission instead of leaving protection disabled. Steam explicitly says, “We do not recommend leaving your firewall disabled.” Follow Steam’s instructions for using a firewall with Steam.
How the game hosts a session matters. In peer-to-peer play, players attempt to establish a direct connection through their routers and firewalls. Steam defines it this way: “Peer-to-peer networking is when messages are sent directly from one player to another.” NAT or firewall rules can prevent that connection from being negotiated; some games or platforms may use a relay when a direct path fails. With a dedicated server, players connect to that server instead, so the network path and requirements differ. These behaviors are specific to the game and platform. Do not forward ports from another game’s guide
Port requirements depend on the game, platform, and whether the session is peer-hosted or dedicated-server based. Steam’s published port list covers Steam services and common Steam networking functions; individual games may need additional ports. Check the current official instructions for your specific game and server type before changing router settings. Steam’s guidance also notes that university, business, and proxy networks may block required traffic. See Steam’s firewall and port guidance.
A port-forwarding recipe for another title is not a safe universal fix: it may not match your game’s requirements, and it cannot correct a full lobby, an offline service, or a version mismatch. If you are on a managed network, ask its administrator whether the game’s required traffic is allowed instead of changing settings you do not control.

Escalate with details that help support
If the problem persists, gather the information that distinguishes a session issue from a network or compatibility issue:
- Both players’ platforms and the game version shown by each client.
- Who is hosting and whether the game uses peer hosting or a dedicated server.
- Whether crossplay is available and enabled, and which accounts are linked if the game requires them.
- The exact error text, where it appears, and whether the invite arrives.
- Whether either player can join other online games or sessions, plus the troubleshooting steps already tried.
Check the game’s official support page and the platform’s service-status information for current outages or version-specific issues. The exact crossplay matrix, required ports, hosting options, and error-code remedy vary by title; without the game and platform combination, none can be prescribed reliably.
