Choose the Nintendo Switch Online version if you already have Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and want access to the Nintendo 64 original. Choose Ocarina of Time 3D if you own a compatible Nintendo 3DS and want its graphical overhaul, touch-screen inventory, gyro aiming, or glasses-free 3D on a supported model. The best fit depends chiefly on the hardware and membership you already have: these are different editions, not two ways to play the same 3DS remake. If you are deciding whether to buy now, note that Nintendo has scheduled a separate Nintendo Switch 2 edition for November 5, 2026; as of October 13, it is still upcoming.
What you get with each version
| Decision | Nintendo Switch Online | Nintendo 3DS |
|---|---|---|
| Game edition | The Nintendo 64 version, included in the Nintendo Classics collection. Nintendo’s June 2025 Switch Online news identifies Ocarina of Time as part of that collection. | The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, a distinct 3DS edition released June 30, 2011. |
| What you need | An active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership for access to Nintendo 64 Classics. | A compatible Nintendo 3DS-family system and a copy of the game. Nintendo ended 3DS eShop software sales in 2023, so a Nintendo digital purchase is no longer an option. |
| Documented edition features | The available information establishes which game is in the collection, but not specific emulator settings, controller latency, or display performance. | Nintendo describes overhauled graphics, a touch-screen inventory, gyro aiming, and glasses-free 3D on supported systems. On Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL, the game displays in 2D. |
| Offline access | Classic games can be played offline for up to seven consecutive days before the system must reconnect to verify active membership. | Membership is not the access condition; the game requires compatible hardware and a copy. Current cartridge stock, condition, and price are not established here. |
The comparison is less about finding one universal winner and more about matching the version to what you already own and what matters to you. The Switch Online option provides access to the Nintendo 64 edition through a subscription library. The 3DS option is its own release, with features Nintendo specifically describes for that handheld. Neither should be confused with the separate Nintendo Switch 2 edition scheduled for November 2026.

Choose Nintendo Switch Online if you already have Expansion Pack
The Switch route is the straightforward option if you already pay for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and want to play the N64 version through the Nintendo Classics collection. Nintendo 64 Classics access is part of Expansion Pack, not the base Nintendo Switch Online membership. Access also depends on keeping the membership active.

If you are checking your own plan, confirm that it is the Expansion Pack tier rather than assuming that any Nintendo Switch Online membership includes this game.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For an existing Expansion Pack member, there is no need to find a 3DS cartridge or obtain a 3DS system simply to access the N64 version. The trade-off is that this is subscription access, not a standalone purchase. If the membership ends, the active-membership condition for classic games is no longer met. Consider that difference if you are weighing a recurring service against the one-time purchase of a game copy on another platform. No current subscription price or 3DS cartridge price is established here, so compare the prices shown by Nintendo and sellers at the time you make your decision.
Offline play is possible, but it is not permanently independent of the subscription: Nintendo says the system must reconnect at least once every seven consecutive days to verify membership. If you expect to be away from an internet connection longer than that, plan around the verification limit. The practical question is not simply whether the game can start offline; it is whether your system will be able to reconnect before the seven-day window runs out.
This is the Nintendo 64 game in the Classics library, not the 3DS edition. The available information does not establish specific emulator settings, latency, or display performance, so those should not be treated as settled advantages or disadvantages in a comparison. There is no supported basis here for claiming that one version runs more smoothly, has better controller response, or looks better on every display. If those factors are decisive for you, check reliable platform-specific information rather than treating them as established differences.
Choose Ocarina of Time 3D for its 3DS-specific features
Ocarina of Time 3D is a separate 3DS release, not simply the N64 version played on a smaller screen. Nintendo describes it as a graphical overhaul and highlights features built around the handheld system:
- Touch-screen inventory: inventory access uses the 3DS touch screen.
- Gyro aiming: the system’s motion controls provide an aiming option.
- Glasses-free 3D: the effect is available on supported 3DS systems. Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL display the game in 2D.
- Circle Pad analog control: Nintendo identifies the Circle Pad as a control feature for the edition.
These are reasons to favor the 3DS edition if you have the hardware and specifically want those features. They do not establish that its controls or presentation are objectively better for every player. The right choice depends on whether the 3DS features matter to you.

- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.

Think of the feature list as a set of preferences to check against your own setup, not a promise that every benefit applies identically on every model. The 3DS edition’s glasses-free 3D is model-dependent: Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL show the game in 2D. If stereoscopic 3D is a deciding factor, make sure the model you plan to use supports it. If you have a 2DS-family system without 3D, the 3DS edition still has Nintendo’s documented graphical overhaul, touch inventory, gyro aiming, and Circle Pad control; the 3D effect simply is not part of that setup.
The touch-screen inventory and gyro aiming are also specifically handheld-oriented features. They may be appealing if you want to use those functions on a 3DS, but the comparison does not establish that they make the game easier or that every player will prefer them. Similarly, Circle Pad analog control is a documented part of the edition, not evidence that its controls are universally superior. What can be said confidently is that these features distinguish the 3DS release from the documented Nintendo 64 collection version.
Nintendo’s product description sums up the intended presentation with the line, “The graphical upgrades and three-dimensional depth breathe new life into the expansive world of Hyrule.” That is Nintendo’s description of the 3DS edition, not a neutral head-to-head measurement against the Switch Online release. Use it to understand how Nintendo positions the edition, while keeping your decision grounded in whether you want those 3DS-specific features.
Can you still buy Ocarina of Time 3D?
Nintendo ended software sales through the Nintendo 3DS eShop on March 27, 2023. That means you should not count on buying a new digital copy from Nintendo. The eShop closure does not by itself establish whether a physical cartridge is currently in stock anywhere. If you are looking for a copy, check the seller’s current stock, cartridge condition, and price; none of those details are established here.
The practical requirement is a compatible Nintendo 3DS-family system and a copy of the game. If you do not already own a 3DS or the cartridge, compare the effort and cost of finding both with the Expansion Pack option, if you already subscribe. A cartridge alone does not solve the hardware question, and a compatible system alone does not provide the game copy. Before buying, verify that the listing is for Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS and that the seller’s description matches the item you intend to purchase.

Because Nintendo no longer sells 3DS software through its eShop, a physical copy is the relevant route to investigate for someone who wants this edition. That does not guarantee a particular store has stock, that a listing is in the condition you want, or that a seller’s price is reasonable. Check seller-specific details, including the stated cartridge condition and return terms, and compare available offers rather than assuming current availability or a standard price. No current stock, regional availability, or price can be established from Nintendo’s eShop closure announcement alone.
This distinction is important if you are comparing cost. The Switch Online route requires the Expansion Pack membership and ongoing active access; the 3DS route requires compatible hardware and a game copy, which may mean searching the physical market if you do not already own them. The right calculation depends on what you have today and the prices available to you. There is no supported current price comparison to quote, so avoid treating either route as automatically cheaper.
Should you wait for the Nintendo Switch 2 edition?
As of October 13, 2026, Nintendo lists a separate physical Nintendo Switch 2 edition with a November 5, 2026 release date. It is upcoming, not yet available on the date of this comparison. Nintendo advertises overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, and modernized controls.
That announced edition may be the more relevant option if you are willing to wait for a new release and those additions appeal to you. It is not the Nintendo 64 game in the Switch Online Classics collection, and it is not Ocarina of Time 3D. The stated release date and feature list do not establish its price, retailer stock, or how its changes will feel in play.
Waiting makes sense if you do not need to start playing now and the announced visual, audio, dialogue, and control changes are what you are looking for. Playing now may make more sense if you already have Expansion Pack and want the N64 edition, or already own a 3DS and a copy of the 3DS edition. The upcoming release does not retroactively change the access requirements for either current option.

Because November 5 is still in the future on October 13, treat the Switch 2 version as a planned alternative, not an available purchase. Check Nintendo’s current release information and retailer availability closer to the date or after it passes. Do not assume a price or that a particular seller will have stock based only on the announced release date. If you are considering a physical copy, confirm its actual release and availability before making plans around buying it.
How to choose: a practical checklist
- Check whether you want to play now. If you do, decide between the existing Nintendo Classics access route and the 3DS edition you can actually access. If you are content to wait, the Switch 2 edition is scheduled for November 5, 2026.
- Check your Nintendo Switch Online plan. The N64 Classics library requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, and access to classic games depends on an active membership. A base membership alone does not meet the stated requirement.
- Check your 3DS hardware and game copy. The 3DS edition requires a compatible 3DS-family system and a copy. Nintendo’s eShop sales ended in March 2023, so a current Nintendo digital purchase is not an option.
- Decide which documented features matter to you. The 3DS edition includes a graphical overhaul, touch inventory, gyro aiming, Circle Pad analog control, and 3D on supported models. The N64 Classics route is the Nintendo 64 version.
- Account for offline use and purchase uncertainty. Classic games need periodic online membership verification after up to seven consecutive offline days. For a 3DS cartridge, check actual stock, condition, seller, and price rather than assuming availability.
This checklist avoids a common mismatch: choosing on the assumption that both platforms offer the same edition or that either route is a straightforward standalone download. The Switch Online route is a membership-based way to access the N64 game. The 3DS route is a separate game copy for compatible handheld hardware. The upcoming Switch 2 title is another distinct option with its own announced feature set and release timing.

- You already have Expansion Pack and want the N64 game: use the Nintendo Switch Online Nintendo Classics collection.
- You have a 3DS and want touch inventory, gyro aiming, or supported glasses-free 3D: look for a copy of Ocarina of Time 3D; check current physical availability rather than assuming it remains available digitally.
- You do not need to play immediately and want the announced new features: consider waiting for the Switch 2 edition scheduled for November 5, 2026, then check release status and availability.
What the comparison can—and cannot—settle
The documented differences answer the practical questions of which edition you access, what hardware or membership you need, and which platform-specific features Nintendo lists. They do not establish controller latency, emulator settings, display performance, current cartridge prices, or how the announced Switch 2 changes will feel in practice. A responsible recommendation should stop at that boundary rather than turn unknowns into claims.
If your choice turns on a preference not covered by those facts—for example, a particular display setup or how a control scheme feels—treat that as a personal test you may need to make. The supported recommendation remains simple: choose the Switch Online route for convenient N64 access when you already have Expansion Pack; choose Ocarina of Time 3D if you have the compatible hardware and value its documented features; consider waiting if the upcoming Switch 2 release is more attractive to you than playing now.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack to play Ocarina of Time on Switch?
Yes. The Nintendo 64 Classics collection, which includes Ocarina of Time, requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Classic-game access depends on an active membership; a base Nintendo Switch Online membership alone does not meet that requirement.

Can I play the Switch Online version offline?
Nintendo says classic games can be played offline for up to seven consecutive days. The system then needs to reconnect to verify that the membership is active.
Can I still buy Ocarina of Time 3D digitally?
Nintendo ended Nintendo 3DS eShop software sales on March 27, 2023, so you should not count on buying a new digital copy from Nintendo. That does not tell you whether a physical cartridge is in stock; check current seller availability, condition, and price.
Does Ocarina of Time 3D work in 3D on every 3DS-family system?
No. Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL display the game in 2D. Glasses-free 3D is available on supported 3DS systems.

Should I wait for the Nintendo Switch 2 edition?
If you do not need to play now and want the announced overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, and modernized controls, waiting is an option. As of October 13, 2026, Nintendo lists its physical Switch 2 edition for November 5, 2026, so it is still upcoming; check current release and retailer information.
Is the Nintendo Switch Online version the same as Ocarina of Time 3D?
No. The Nintendo Classics collection provides the Nintendo 64 version. Ocarina of Time 3D is a distinct 3DS edition released June 30, 2011, with its own documented features.
The Bottom Line
Play the Nintendo 64 version through Nintendo Switch Online if you already have Expansion Pack and want access without seeking out 3DS hardware and a cartridge. Choose Ocarina of Time 3D if you have a compatible 3DS and specifically value its graphical overhaul, touch inventory, gyro aiming, or supported glasses-free 3D. If you can wait, Nintendo’s separate Switch 2 edition is scheduled for November 5, 2026; check its current release status and availability before buying.
