When did OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 come out, and where can you play it?
Square Enix announced and launched OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Microsoft Store. The publisher gives December 4, 2025 as the general release date and lists December 5 for Steam. Check the storefront for your region and platform for current availability.

Square Enix’s product information and launch announcement provide the platform and date details.
What is the story about?
This is a standalone prequel set on Orsterra. Its story of revenge and restoration centers on the divine rings and a protagonist whose hometown has been destroyed. In the publisher-authored PlayStation Blog post, Square Enix identifies the town as Wishvale.

What is new in the gameplay?
Create the protagonist
Unlike a story built around a set of separate lead characters, OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 puts the player in the role of a customizable protagonist. Character creation lets players choose appearance, voice, motions, and a favorite dish, according to the Square Enix Store listing.
Restore Wishvale
Town building gives the protagonist a role beyond combat: players restore their hometown, place buildings and decorations, and invite allies to live there. Path Actions also support inviting people, battling, and obtaining items, connecting exploration and recruitment with the town system.

Build a large party
The official store describes a roster of over 30 allies and a party of up to eight characters. The game is single-player; the larger party is a tactical team-building feature, not multiplayer.
Use familiar combat systems and Ultimate Techniques
HD-2D presentation, Path Actions, and the Break & Boost battle system return. Square Enix describes Ultimate Techniques as a new tactical layer: the protagonist learns them through story progression, while other characters learn them at the training ground. Was there a demo, and does its progress carry over?
Square Enix offered a free demo with up to three hours of play and save-data carryover to the full game. The PlayStation Blog description says it includes the opening prologue and the first chapter of multiple story arcs, or three hours of play, whichever comes first. Square Enix Senior Manager of Editorial Content Duncan Heaney confirmed: “And yes – progress does carry over to the full game.” That describes the demo as announced; check the relevant platform storefront to see whether it is currently available.

The clearest changes are structural: a player-created protagonist anchors the story, Wishvale gives exploration a restoration goal, and the party can include up to eight characters. The game retains recognizable systems such as Path Actions and Break & Boost while adding Ultimate Techniques. These are differences in design, not a claim that one entry is better than another.
