Reviews praise its flexible eight-character battles and substantial RPG journey, while noting that its more linear, episodic structure may feel less distinctive than earlier entries.
What kind of Octopath game is this?
Octopath Traveler 0 is a prequel and substantial structural reworking, drawing in part on story and gameplay ideas from OCTOPATH TRAVELER: Champions of the Continent. Square Enix says it adds features including a custom protagonist and town building. Rather than following several separate protagonists through intersecting personal stories, this entry gives you one created central hero and a revenge-and-restoration plot.

The conflict is organized around Wealth, Power and Fame. The hero pursues the figures responsible for destroying their home town, and GamesRadar’s review says the three arcs can be approached in different orders. That gives the story some choice in its route through the central conflicts, even as the overall structure is more focused on one protagonist than earlier games.
How do combat and party tactics work?
Combat retains the series’ turn-based Break and Boost system, but expands the active party to as many as eight characters arranged in front and back rows. Reviewers identify this larger ensemble as one of the game’s most consequential changes: rotating characters between rows adds tactical flexibility and makes party composition a more prominent part of planning.
#1 Best Overall
- Embark on an adventure of your own creation. The latest in the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series.
- New story content – Experience original, streamlined story content and quests with new paths to achieve.
- Character creation – Create a customized protagonist with unique appearance, voice, motions and more.
- Town building system – Rebuild the protagonist's town as the story progresses with evolving town reconstruction mechanics and development while inviting new people to live in the town.*
- HD-2D Visuals – The series’ iconic graphic style returns, bringing a striking blend of retro 2D characters in a beautiful 3D world.
TechRadar also highlights Ultimate Techniques. Together, the expanded party and familiar battle foundations give the combat a broader tactical canvas without abandoning the series’ recognizable rhythm. Both TechRadar and GamesRadar regard the battles as a strength; TechRadar describes them as compelling.
What does rebuilding the town add?
Your home town is destroyed early in the story. Its restoration becomes a parallel thread of progress: you find survivors and invite allies or other travelers to settle there. The growing town connects the personal stakes of the plot to a visible place that changes as the adventure continues.
Rank #2
Reviewers appreciate this as a meaningful change of pace, not as a full town-simulation game. Its role is to complement the RPG journey and its recruitable ensemble rather than replace exploration and combat with a separate cozy-management experience.
How does it compare with earlier Octopath Traveler games?
| Element | Octopath Traveler 0 | Earlier entries |
|---|---|---|
| Story focus | One created central protagonist pursuing a revenge-and-restoration story. | Multiple separate protagonist stories form the series’ familiar structure. |
| Protagonist | Player-created hero. | The earlier structure centers on its distinct protagonists rather than one created central hero. |
| Party tactics | Up to eight characters across front and back rows, with row swapping. | The eight-character front-and-back-row setup is a defining change in this entry. |
| Town progression | Restore the destroyed home town by finding survivors and inviting people to live there. | Town rebuilding is an added progression thread in this entry. |
The comparison is less about abandoning the series’ visual and combat identity than redirecting its narrative and progression. If you most value the earlier games’ ensemble of distinct personal stories, the shift to a single created hero is the key adjustment to consider.

What do reviewers praise, and what may not work for everyone?
Strengths
- Flexible combat: Reviewers praise the expanded party and the tactical options created by front- and back-row play.
- A satisfying central adventure: TechRadar finds the main story an enjoyable classic RPG journey.
- A useful change of pace: The town-rebuilding thread adds a different kind of progression alongside battles and story arcs.
Trade-offs
- A different narrative shape: TechRadar says the created-protagonist approach and more linear story can feel unlike the previous games’ structure.
- Familiarity and pauses: GamesRadar notes familiar locations, episodic arcs and gaps between story beats. Those rhythms may be less compelling for players who want a continuously escalating plot.
- A major time commitment: GamesRadar reviewer Alan Wen estimated the main story at over 100 hours. That is a reviewer estimate, not a guaranteed completion time; individual playthroughs can vary.

It is a strong fit if you want a substantial turn-based RPG, enjoy building a flexible party and are open to an Octopath story centered on one customizable hero. The rebuilding thread adds a distinctive secondary goal, while the Wealth, Power and Fame arcs give the revenge plot room to unfold.
